true, but it slows me down in telephotos. it's like comparing the zooming feel of the 70-200s and the 50-150/50-135 to the cheaper 70-300 lenses out there. i just don't like the barrel extending for telephotos, the zoom action is much smoother if the lens is IF (internal focusing). i mean, canon was able to make a sealed 70-200/4 lens with IS (i think) and IF in a small, light, affordable package. i'm sure pentax can make a 60-250/4 that's a little bigger, a little bit more expensive, with IF. and maybe i don't like it because it's a DA* and i think of DA*s as the equivalent of canon's L lenses and nikon's gold ring lenses.

anyway, it's just my opinion though
Internal Focus and Internal zoom are different and should affect lens design quite differently IMO.

all da* are internal focusing! the barrel only extends to extend the zoom. It creates a smaller lens in total and lighter so it's not really that bad!

But soccerjoe5 seems to be confused, mixing internal zooming and internal focussing (well, that's what I understood from his post).

I do hope this lens does not extend when zooming. As much as I don't like the idea that it's an f/4 lens (would rather see f/2.8 - I know it would make the lens huge) I think it will be great for shooting indoor sports with a sensor that can do ISO3200 without too much noise.

But I think they'll make another DA* zoom with f/2.8 to extend the DA* 50-135mm f/2.8. Well just have to wait and see ... Photokina is close.

and what it'll come out looking like (most likely. I mean.. how many times can you redesign a lens?)
IMHO, just adding tripod colar makes redesign of lens.

wide lens is hard to make FF compatible

I think this lens will be FF compatible, because it is long zoom. 60~

In the earlier version, there seems to be a distinct difference between the diameter of the lens barrel at the focusing ring and at the zoom ring; in this new version the whole barrel seems to stay the same size up right until the tripod collar and lens mount...could this mean some internal changes?

Oops! I didn't know that. I only have the 50-135mm... the 16-50mm is my next lens.

Good to hear that that won't affect the sealing. I've got another vacation coming up in January and would love to add the 60-250mm to my bag (assuming I can do it without totally going into debt... which I probably won't be able to do!) Part of my justification for buying the 50-135mm was that I'd sell my Vivitar S1 70-210mm version 3... but I still haven't sold it, maybe I'll use the same justification for the 60-250.

personaly, I think 60-250 is more important than pentax to release FF DSLR. just hope it turns out worth the loooong waiting.

Can somebody clarify why this lens is so important to so many? It would/will make a fairly long telezoom. Wouldn't a fast standard or wide zoom be more important (like the 16-50 f/2.8).

Just wondering.

Though I have the 16-50mm, my style is to shoot very tight on my subject. Though I love the 50-135mm for people photography, it's not near long enough to shoot animals. I took a 300mm prime to the zoo last Sunday and it reinforced my desire to be able to 'go long'. This 60-250 or a 100-400 would be ideal for my way of shooting.

Maybe it's supposed to be that all-important "prime-lens beater"; with exceptional performance across the entire focal range.

I for one would much rather have a faster 70-200. :ugh:
