Not unusual at all. One has to look at stated camera lens focal lengths as being in the ballpark and not as actual facts. An awful lot of 300mm lenses out there that are have an actual focal length closer the 280mm than 300mm.

Been this way since I got my first SLR in 1970.
The bigger thing is that for most zooms, the stated focal length is only true at infinity focus and so for a lens like the DA 55-300, the 300mm focal length is quite a bit shorter if you are focusing on something closer than that.

But you are right that Pentax is a bit unusual in their naming of the FA limiteds. Most camera companies would take the 31/43/77 and round them up or down to make round sounding numbers.

That's perhaps why Leica has a 280/2.8 and not a 300/2.8?

I agree. I'm really not a fan of the numerous "dual cam" two-extending-cylinder lens designs. There's a little to much mechanics going on there for barrel stability and long-term reliability - though I'll admit, that's a personal opinion

It is interesting how asahi man was largely dismissed and dumped on last month here but accepted as accurate today. Seems to ebb and flow..

But I find it exciting that Ricoh might actually update the 16-50 with new optics. If they can improve resolution at f/2.8 and reduce CA it will be a really nice lens.. esp with the proven reliable DC motor.

And then an updated 50-135mm.. so nice.

I don't understand why Ricoh didn't do this several years ago.. but I'm glad they are doing something now at least.

It's been clear for a very long time that re-vamps of the DA* lenses are necessary. I think if they'd been done years ago it would have done a lot of good for the Pentax brand - it's very harmful to have current models out which are known to have design/manufacturing faults.

People started talking about DA* 16-50mm mkII around 2010 and I started to wait for one around 2011. Waited for 5 years until I bought 16-85mm. So not in hurry at the moment but I almost left Pentax because of bad copy of 16-50mm

Since this patent appears to reinforce what he said about a new DA* 16-50, what's the problem?

I wish Pentax would be able to release those in time.

The Germans tend to be very precise about such things.

Not what I'm referencing.. and I said a lot of (nice) things in that post, yet you focus on the one thing you find bad? no no.. not going there with you.

No need to get defensive, that wasn't an attack.
I'm not sure what that part of your statement is about... so I asked.

If Pentax is updating the DA*16-50 I would think that they will also update the DA*50-135. The two sort of go hand in hand. Now that would boost sales in a big way.
