Do they issue patents when the optical formula stays the same? (that is, does this look to be using a new optical formula?)

16.52 rounds to 17, not 16.
48.35 rounds to 48, not 50.
So this looks more like a DA*17-48/2.9.

They say my A 70-210 is actually a 75-205 and the 50 1.7 is in fact a 52mm and the FA 28 2.8 is actually 29.5mm or so... So that is not uncommon...

16.52mm x 48.35mm f/2.9 just doesn't roll off the tongue.

16x50/2.9 will likely sell a bit better.

As long as the focus motor & mechanism is properly designed and put together, this is good news regardless of the specifics of the optics.

True, but if they want it to be a killer "Pro-grade" lens with 1000usd price tag, I think that they should also improve the optics.
