Is there any information on whether it's a new design or based on the Tokina 70-200? I wouldn't mind either, I'm just curious. The sudden appearance and a soonish release date (by Pentax standards) might be an indication of something - or not.

I don't think it would be based on the new Tamron 70-210mm f/4 Di VC USD, since that would imply it's more of a rebadge and they probably wouldn't drop those 10m at the long end...
Of course there is no official info for us. It would seem logical that it is Tokina, given that Tokina got licence for 50 mm and perhaps will be having 85&35 too(their new opera-line). So that Pentax could get some of these lenses for them. Lot of people says ’it is Tamron rebadge..’...for almost everything.

Good...good...
I hope it can replace my 16-85, it serves like the body cap of my K5IIs

D FA 70-200/4 will be naturally good/great smaller option for FF and APS-C than 70-200/2.8. Upgrade of DA 60-250 could also still be good idea? Maybe with that baffle not removed. It has good image guality and bigger zoom range, if they are improving 16-50 . . .
Evidence APSc flagship is planned:

DA*11-18/2.8
DA*16-50/2.8
DA*50-135/2.8
DA*60-250/4

Why downgrade an APSc * lens to FF D FA?

That is true, If FF users want to ruin their DA * lenses they will have to do it them selfs, yo make em work in FF mode.

Well, if you think the DA* 60-250 would be ruined by slightly shortening its focal range, improving its optics, using a reliable and faster AF motor - then I guess it will indeed be ruined.

In my opinion a 70-200 is quite a different lens than a 60-250.

The zoom range on the 60-250 is 46% greater than that of a 70-200. They are two very different lenses. I am glad to see the DFA 70-200 is on the way, but I hope the DA* 60-250 gets updated with a new motor and HD coatings. I would be surprised it they updated it to true FF status though.

If this new 16-50 works on a K-5/II/IIs I will be surprised. KAF4 going forward seems like the safe assumption.

Yes. Ruined. It would not be the same anymore..that said, I would not mind if it would be getting little a bit ruined.

The DA* 11-18mm will be a KAF3 lens.

Yes, the 11-18 is KAF3, but how many more times do you think that will happen on future lenses? My statement was that the safe assumption is that, going forward, new lenses won't work on the K-5 series or older cameras.

It is probable but not certain either.
They *may* decide the lenses must be able to work on old aps bodies.
Clearly, as for DFAs there's no prior body than K-1 so the problem is not as relevant.

I expect, personally, that new lenses will be KAF4 though.

KAF4 or not

KAF4 clearly has advantages - if Tokina is going to issue each of the new DFA* primes in other mounts: then electronic aperture makes the process much easier. If the lens has expansion between the mount and the diaphram, electronic apaerture solves that mechanically complex problem too (just a guess about the 55-300 PLM).

I can't see the advantages are so great for a re-work of an existing DA* lens. As @kunzite reminds us above, the new DA* 11-18 is going to be KAF3 for backwards compatiblity.

It's good to be cautious, though, and indeed KAF4 is the future. It actually surprised me a bit that the DA* 11-18mm is a KAF3 and not a KAF4 lens.
