It will probably still be KAF3 since it is an update to a KAF3 lens.

The DA* 11-18mm is not an update to a KAF3 lens, nor will be the (possible) 16-50 and 50-135.

Indeed, the DA★ 16-50mm and 50-135mm f/2.8 are KAF2 lenses.

Yes, with dual-AF systems.
I will assume significant barrel changes - if they wanted, they could make them KAF4.

Yeah, "update" would be like when they went to the HD coatings and curved blades on some existing lenses. This is something else where only the focal lengths are shared.

My assumption (and you know what they say about assumptions...) is that the 11-18 is KAF3 because it's been in the pipeline for a while and only mentioned when prototype hardware was finally mature enough to show off.

What do we know about this new 50-135? Is it still a crop lens?

Well, we can only guess the reasons they've made the D FA* 50mm a KAF4 lens but not the DA* 11-18mm. The safe way is to have a KAF4 compatible camera.
We don't know anything about a new 50-135, except that it was hinted at by asahiman... right? If true, I'd guess (again... guessing!) APS-C.

A really nice rendering 50-135 f2.8 zoom sounds like a portrait photog's dream lens if on a full frame body. Not that it can't be nice on crop but the long end would probably be less useful than the wide. In any case, none of this is me, I'm just typing out idle thoughts with this one.

Might be that DFA70-200/2.8 is fitting for that bill. I personally would like that. Also that coming up 70-200/4 sounds great. I could put my one my favorite lenses, M70-150/4 on the shelf. It is compact, with great image quality(for what it is).

I think 70-200's are used for such purposes. I think being able to move wider from 70 back to 50mm would be of more value vs. going longer from 135 to 200mm, if you know what I mean. The D-FA*70-200 is also really large and heavy for its class and the 50-135 might be easier to lug around.

I know what you mean, besides lot of 70-200 shooters uses the long end (135-200) for portraits. But actually fast nifty or 85 would perhaps do better? As you almost said. But that is different story, and zooms are practical solutions. As I understand, all 70-200/2.8 lenses are heavy and big. There is something what 50-135 zoom could do for FF, but isit still ’fast’ and long enough...well that 70-200/4 should get rid of that heavy and large part. Perhaps there should be limited 60-150/3,5 zoom. Small, sharp and little a bit odd. FF compactible ofcourse.

The DFA* 70-200 acts more like a 70-135 to me. I don't have a 200mm prime to compare it to, but my Sigma 75-200 3.8 AF has a noticeably longer reach at 200

The sharpness and focus accuracy of the DFA* easily lets you crop in quite a ways on the K1

Combine it with a limited 25-50 3.5 or something in a similar range

There is supposed to be some focusbreathing, when shooting close with 70-200

This would be great zoom paggage

I wasn't talking about the DA* 11-18 which is a KAF3 lens. The 16-50 maybe KAF2 because it still has a screw drive, but still it is an update to an older design. The screw drive will probably be dropped but Ricoh may want to keep the lens compatible with older models since they did in the DA* 11-18.

Yes, the DA* 16-50 and 50-135 are KAF2 lenses (KAF3 dropped support for screw drive).
The new versions will be either KAF3 or KAF4; every camera since the K10D will support in-lens motors, and people who can't afford to upgrade from their *istDs and K100Ds are unlikely to afford the new lenses

Key words being ‘will support’. K-1ll Mount is KAF2 for backward compatibility.
