This is a Pentax-patented design, with some Co-design work by Tokina. Tokina has licensed the d sign and will offer this lens in other mounts, such as for Nikon and Canon. As elsewhere stated, the 70-200 and 150-450 are 100% Pentax designs and aren’t licensed to Tamron (or anyone else).

Why not $800? Because it is worth $1,200 - $1,300.
Hmm, ok didn't know that, but the 70-200 G2 has so many similarities…
Sorry for the confusion.

As for the price, putting it over 1k would leave them at an disadvantage over Sigma. Just consider for a moment not what it's worth for you or me, or as pentaxians, but the options available in the third party manufacturer market for all the different DSLR camera mounts.

Consider this: is really an advantage of AF over one lens maker and WR over another really worth that price difference?

I really hope you guys are right, and that this is going to reflect on good income for Pentax through the licensing of the design and allow them to develop many more lenses in the future.

I'm afraid that the price is going to be north of 1000 dollars. Based on other lenses with similar specs, that's probably reasonable. It remains to see where Tokina prices theirs. I imagine it will be a little cheaper than the Pentax offering, but not much (it is a third party lens, after all).

Fair price? What is a fair price? Pricing depends much more on brand name than anything else.
So once again you're saying that you're not willing to pay for a Pentax even Sigma prices. Who cares? Others will buy it.

There are no similarities between the D FA* 70-200 f/2.8 and the Tamron G2. Outside of them being 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses, that is.
There are no similarities between the D FA 150-450mm and the Tamron... wait, there's no similar Tamron whatsoever. Yet you included that lens in your fake list.

I am going to guess it won’t be far off. Might be a little more or less. I am thinking 800-1200. If closer to the lower end of the range I am going to consider one.

The Pentax rep in the video below said TBC 1199 - not sure if he meant UK or US price. It's a UK trade show (says it towards the end of the video) :

First look at the Pentax K1 Mark II and DFA 50mm f/1.4 Lens - YouTube
Which would put it around $1600 USD. Ugh.

The £1,199 UK price would include VAT and therefore be closer to US$1,350.

I can’t find it, but I could swear I read the USD introductory price is set at $1,299, so $1,350 +/-. I just can’t prove it.

It's not a bad price.
This lens is more than a mere 50mm f/1.4; it's their first truly high-end prime in a while, it's Pentax getting back to the game. The price to be paid is also the price of having Pentax' first ring-type SDM.

It doesn't work that way - very often the $ prices are the same numerically or even lover than the £ prices

Too true and also, not very fair to UK buyers since VAT is not usually as much as the difference in exchange rates. I wonder if there is something else in play to cause initial list pricing issues like this? Or is it just like Steam charging the same number of Euro for each dollar on digital purchases?

Import duties? Higher shipping costs? Different exchange rates to the yen? Different distributor markup? Different length of warranty? Just thinking out loud.

USD has been strong this year vs. GBP as US interest rates have risen.

GBP1,300 - VAT = GBP1,040 = $1,400 at today’s exchange rates, so $1,350 is credible. Once they decide initial list prices and accept Dealer orders the factory price (and markup) is locked. They hedge currency risk for several months.

I doubt it will sell more than 4 copies here in Finland. Maybe 23 pieces in the whole Scandinavia at that price. 20 of them will go straight to collector's shelves. The problem is that while FF camera body offering has relatively competitive price and attracts crop-tier buyers, are they willing to spend $$$$$ on new prime series? Tokina price will be the max amount this lens is really worth.

Those having the $$$$$ and looking for FF set are going to buy Sony or CaNikon for they all the common lens options available NOW.
