Interesting. I wonder if US Import lenses have the Japan label on the barrel.

Okay I can see it now. Thanks OoKU.
They could find a more obscure place to write it?
Is anything inscribed on the Tokina in this location?

Interesting (and what I saw at Photokina). But then, why does that angry guy reads Vietnam?

Maybe Tokina has the same deal with Pentax as Pentax has with Tamron about lens development and production. Just the Opera series maybe full inhouse design and production by Pentax. Good for labor in the Vietnam plant.

My guess is June, if Tokina is planning for June with their version of this lens, there's no way Pentax comes later than that.

Beware of marketing gimmicks. iphones are made in China, "designed" in N.A. Irix lenses just the same are made in South Korea, "designed" in Switzerland.

Now one lens says "made in Vietnam" (relatively clear) and the other just says "Japan". It does NOT say "made in Japan".

They certainly do not write "Country of Origin Vietnam" for the Tokina on their website for no reason.

There is no evidence for the "Japan" meaning anything, least with regards to where it actually was manufactured.

If challenged they could just say that Tokina wants to express it is a Japanese company which sells the lens.

If Tokina marketing folks can impress the 80% fools out there with the little meaningless "Japan" imprint on the barrel, they have done their job. Conspiracy theories work to their advantage.

Having handled the Opera 50mm f/1.4 and Pentax D-FA*50mm f/1.4 lenses personally there is little to distinguish the fit and finish of the two lenses. They are both Superb....regrettably, I have not been able to put them through their paces on my optics bench.

You're welcome to borrow my DFA*50 for a workout on your bench any time. Keen to see how my DFA15-30 now measures up while we're there....

Made in "nnn" is a merchandise mark without any meaning with respect to manufacturing, or product origin.

To have a "Made in Japan" label does not literally mean made in Japan. Back when compact 35mm cameras were all the rage, Kodak had some of their cameras manufactured in China. At the factory in China where they were made, the cameras with the Kodak label made on them all said "Made in China" on them. The Chinon version of the same camera said "Made in Japan" on it. Some sort of convoluted reason for this involving parts sources, design and who was supervising the assembly line if I remember correctly.
