Someone should search threads about modifying the K50 firmware for the K30. But not me, I feel lazy today.

so you could simply rename the file and brick it anyway?

True. As a former QA and Service Engineer I found that you can protect people form a lot of things, but you can't protect them from themselves.

If so, ouch =) (haven't looked it up but I trust you...but then again with this kind of not caring for the issue perhaps I shouldn't have commented in this thread...)

I guess I'll go back to happily shoot the K1 and close my eyes to this and what other kind of software atrocities there might be there ;-), and just be happy with the IQ.

(But seriously, a simple file hash checksum is easy to do and would stop most if not all "accidental" or renamed upgrade/brick attempts though the firmware upgrade, so it is a little bit lazy...but then maybe their work philosophy is perfect for me since i lazily didn't look up historical versions of the issue =) )

Well, if you change just a tag, or the file name - that's no longer an accident but on purpose.

The usual fix for a bricked camera is to replace the mainboard.

I can see someone "bricking" their K-1 and then sending it in for upgrade. The upgrade TOS says all faults or problems will be repaired before the mainboard upgrade takes place. Said out-of-warranty repairs would be (on approval) at additional cost to the owner. So the owner would have to pay for replacing the K-1 mainboard with a K-1 board, camera tested for other faults - any other faults repaired, and then paying to have the K-1 board upgraded to the K-1II. All because they wanted to get a partial upgrade (AF and dynamic PS) for free.

Well for those who remember, the K10 firmware v1.3 (I think) was supposedly not downgradable.
A simple mod allowed it. So hacking version number at least was done a decade ago.

The disassembly procedure is told in hacking pentax firmware thread. If someone is interested in K-1 and K-1 m2 differences, those could be compared and see if something could be backported. That requires expendable K-1 . It might get broken.

And RE of firmwares requires a lot of skill.

Oh, now I understand why frozen pizza packages have the warning "Cook before eating."

Did you extract the zip? There should be a .bin file in the root of the card.
