So I got my DFA* 50/1.4. It's working great. I thought I'd check back on this post. Pentax still hasn't ended? Fascinating.

Pentax can do more about promoting their brand. I have always been impressed for the value for money of their cameras.

What would you suggest they do in BC? What would it cost and how many potential customers would they touch?

I always wonder what percent of the customer base already knew about Pentax when they went looking. Outside of photography oriented publications/sites/etc., I can't think of seeing a camera add for any brand in a place the general public would be viewing it.

Maybe Amateur Photographers (UK) should check the web for other brands that are not going to survive 🙂 - found this on a Canon Rumors thread

Ricoh Pentax is the best value for money of any DSLR on the market but only committed customers know of it. Ricoh needs to attract a larger user base with something like a quality mirror-less system camera able to use all the K mount lenses.

It'll be less value for money if they tried to match the big boys promotional budgets, Simon.

If in your town, they raised the price of all your future camera and lens purchases by $200 each but it meant you gained one more Pentax shooting buddy, was it worth it?

For a niche brand, the best value marketing is probably to have brand ambassadors who specialise in the work that emphasises the best characteristics of your product. There are several professional Pentax shooters, as noted on Ricoh's Pentax pages, but I wonder if they are using them to best advantage.

Yeah, possibly, Rob.

I don't think they like this forum, to be honest.

Too much negativity, as Kenspo points out.

They tend to post more in the Pentaxians Facebook group, and I suppose the Ricoh socials.

The photographers seemingly most important to Ricoh are of course Japanese (Yoshiaki Kobayashi may be someone who is in regular contact with/influence on the designers, since he does many of the sample photos) and it's impractical to have them engaging on foreign sites that they otherwise would never use.

Not all promotion has to be expensive. A lot of internet based stuff is quite a bit cheaper. Pentax really should have a You Tube channel with brand ambassadors and other pro Pentaxians shooting in the field and explaining how they use different features on their Pentax cameras. They should turn Pentax Photo Gallery into something worthwhile with higher end, higher quality photos.

I don't particularly want them advertising on TV or stuff like that -- to me that is a waste of money -- but they could certainly do a bit more (I think they advertise more in Japan).

Internet advertising *is* expensive, even if you sit in your basement and make vlogs. You have to pay a lot for the Likes and Google ads to get anyone come to your site who didn't already want to.

Don't treat it like advertising then. Just treat it as education using Pentax cameras. I still think that it could be done a bit better.

Whatever it's called, it's expensive, and obviously fails the Return on Investment modelling that would be done at least annually in each regional market.

If you and I and the usual suspects are the only ones who go to this imaginary YouTube channel, it's failed.

For instance, https://monetizepros.com/video-monetization/why-you-probably-wont-get-rich-famous-on-youtube/
