Subject isolation and bokeh look really nice. Much better than my DA*55 I reckon.

I don't need it, but that's never stopped me in the past

Look at the MTF graphs of (i) high-end µ4/3 lenses and (ii) extreme telephoto prime lenses. You'll see that they are at their sharpest wide open.
What are your examples, @Mistral?

Upon close inspection of the photos still available, I have to admit I am quite impressed with how the lens apparently renders, which only makes my desire to buy the lens even more feverish.

That said, I'm not a fan of the 72mm filter thread of this lens that isn't shared with any Pentax lens that I can think of, so I'm hoping that if I screw in a thin 72-67mm step down ring I won't suffer from any additional vignetting so that I can used the 67mm lens caps I have for my other frequently used lenses (Sigma 35mm ART, Pentax FA-J 18-35mm, Pentax A 35-105mm etc).

I'm thinking of doing the same to my Pentax D-FA 24-70mm so that I can get rid of that pesky 82mm lens cap.

This is your objection, Josh? That's like kicking Candice Swanpoel out of your bed for breaking wind!

If I get the DFA 50, it will be able to share filters with my Samyang 85 f1.4.

72-77mm step-up rings don't cost much. I'll be getting one.

Canon's and Nikon's 500mm f/4 and 600mm f/4 for instance. The Panasonic 200mm f/2.8 albeit in the centre only (the corners improve at f/4).

To be perfectly honest, it's a minor hassle I admit (and if Ricoh intends to release their new primes with a 72mm filter thread, it'll become less of a problem), but also one that irks me to no end. While filter uses is no longer compulsory for photography as it was in the film era, on the thing that always startles me about the photography industry of the 70-80's is the standardisation of features within each company's lineup.

For example, with the K, M and A era lenses, Pentax primes generally had filter threads of 49 or 52mm, and A era zooms often share a macro feature across the entire range of zooms. A more recent example is with the DA Limited Primes, all of which have 49mm filter threads. It shows great intuition from the manufacturer to pay attention to small details like this.

The filter size is a direct consequence of the optical design, which itself is made to meet certain basic specifications, and certain image quality levels.
Those 6-7 elements double Gauss designs - originating in the '60s - can't hold a candle to the modern D FA*. But if that's what you wish... you can get it, now, so why the complaining?

The DA Limiteds are (surprise!) limited by their design brief - one of which was no doubt a restriction to the 49mm filter diameter.

The modern * lenses have no such limitations. The DA* lenses were the same - a mixture of 58, 67 and 77mm filters.

DA HD 20-40mm f2.8-f4 Limited has 55mm thread and what a nice lens it is. Not a prime obviously but a collection of primes.

BTW the link to the 50mm test photos is null and void.

The sentence quoted by ffking and those that surround it:

are quotes of posts asahi man wrote in Digital Photography review's forum in early March:

Source: Pentax DFA* 50mm F1.4 looks similar to Tokina 50mm F1.4: Pentax SLR Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review and Pentax DFA* 50mm F1.4 looks similar to Tokina 50mm F1.4: Pentax SLR Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review

The header of the paragraph from Kennychi's article quoted above can be translated as follows: "Foreign websites got information as follows:"

After each sentence in English (a statement by asahi man) there is:

- a sentence in Chinese: that's the translation of the sentence in English
- an arrow
- a sentence in Chinese: that's Kennychi's comment.

Hereafter a quick and dirty translation. In blue Kennychi's comments
  • Everything of this lens is developed and patented by Pentax and Pentax produced
  • The Tokina is made by Tokina but uses the Pentax patent and different coatings. -> Many PENTAX full-frame lenses are handed over by Tokina, which seems to be unavoidable.
What do you mean by “handed over by Tokina?”
