Wow. Get this lens AND the DFA 50 and you could get a full workout with them.

It's APS-C only lens. I would add DA*16-50/2.8

OK who's going to do the math and tell us what resolution it can produce.....
Any voluteers? What? No one?

OK then we'll just have to wait for the Pentax spec sheet.

Well, given the fact the DFA 50 is due in less than a week... I figure this is a before 2018 ends release date.

Good to see a patent, this will be a sweet lens.

I like to think of myself as a photographer who is way more about images than gear, but I must admit it's been quite a while that I've been as excited about a new-lens release as with the HD PENTAX-DA ★ 11-18mm F2.8.

Just have no idea how to pony up the dosh to afford one. But you can dream, right?

And I can and do remind myself that ultra-wide is already pretty nicely covered by the smc DAs 10-17 and 15 Ltd. in my kit.

I never felt the need for anything wider than the DA 15mm Ltd on APS-C. However, the DFA 15-30 on FF gets plenty of use at the wide end from me, so I guess the DA 11-18 would too on my K3. However, it's not a priority for me at the moment.

This is both good and bad news. Bad that there are multiple patents so it sounds as if the design is not even finalized, but good because it means that the lens is going to be produced. My bad point could be another good point and they are just patenting multiple designs that could be used in other focal lengths in the future, and by doing that, p they are protecting their intellectual property. Or just screwing with Sigma so they don't know which lens design to copy when they come crawling back to Making Pentax lenses after the D-FA 50 destroys their Art Lens business.

Apparently release of DFA 50 has been held up by production issues - since this is a completely different lens, it may not have those issues; if it does, lessons from DFA may speed up development of this lens. In any case, no reason to expect DFA 50 schedule to radically affect schedule for this one.

I suspect the top Sigma executives don't give Pentax a thought from one year to the next.

Too true, That is why the smiley face is there. I always poke Sigma on facebook and tell them that they can market to me all they want, but I always comment that they have nothing for me. i am sure they love it when the Pentax users all do that.

Multiple patents? You mean multiple designs in the single patent?
This is pretty standard practice in patents. Others were like that too.
Believe me, it's finalized.

Right. They're not patenting a product per se, but a certain aspect of it - and they want to cover as many possible cases as possible, besides the actual implementation.
Having several embodiments given as example is perfectly normal.
Having several patents linked to a single lens is perfectly normal.

Pentax just wants to make sure that someone doesn't take their design and tweak it just a little bit and then release their own version of the DA *11-18. You do this by listing several variations of the lens. The actual design of the lens is certainly final at this point and it is just a matter of getting a production line set and turning out adequate numbers to get them to the market.
