Multiple patents? You mean multiple designs in the single patent?
This is pretty standard practice in patents. Others were like that too.
Believe me, it's finalized.
Then I feel better and need to really put away the cash then! I do want this lens and am pretty excited about it coming in the near future.

Pentax just wants to make sure that someone doesn't take their design and tweak it just a little bit and then release their own version of the DA *11-18. You do this by listing several variations of the lens. The actual design of the lens is certainly final at this point and it is just a matter of getting a production line set and turning out adequate numbers to get them to the market.
I learned something on the forums again today! See why I love this place!

Thanks for sharing this!

I'm impatiently waiting for this lens. Whereas I do have UWA covered by many lenses (DA10-17, Sig8-16, Samy10/2.8), none of these take filters. Actually my DA15/4 is the widest available that takes filters (though not practical since my current filters are all 77mm), and my Samy16/2 is the widest that I frequently use filters on. I would like to go wider with filters though (esp long exposures and IR), and this 11-18/2.8 is on my list just for that exactly. Well, that and the f/2.8 (astro) and the WR (outdoor hiking and travel)... I would have to use a step-down adapter to begin with, but that won't take away too much of the FoV I think (=hope), esp since I go for square crops most of the time.

Try Sigma 10-20/3.5 - it takes filtres

Do you guys review all the new patents or do you get notices of things you are interested in? I am always amazed at how quickly these obscure filings get noticed.

I'll get this lens once the K-3II replacement comes out. It's probably going to be a lot nicer than my old Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 that I had for my Sony A200.

...yeah, the 82mm, king-size variety!

The 4-5.6 should take 77mm, which are the ones @Ishpuini has.

Why is the face of this lens so large - the lens opening is only about 45mm, so there is a wide ring of plastic/metal/whatever.

Yup, but it kinda makes sense, since it's quite prone to vignetting: -2.16 EV at 10mm f/3.5 according to Lenstip review.
It's a tradeoff, no doubt, but I think it's necessary.

It's because of the FOV and bulging front element. Any UWA has this inconvenience. Either a ridiculously big screw on filter, or none at all. And then you have to use these giant 150/165 square filters with complex adapters.

The 12mm 2.8 I have uses 95mm screw in CPLs. So I consider 82mm filters small to medium range.

It all is about the FoV angles from the entrance pupil.

I have it in my hand just now... it's not that bulging... nothing like the 8-16mm anyway. Which doens't take screw-on filters at all, as you said.

Indeed it does, but I don't want to replace my Sig8-16 with another Sigma. Whereas I'm happy with both the 8-16 and the 180 macro, these are the only Sigma's in a long series that have pleased me. I actually don't want to buy Sigma anymore. Besides, if I upgrade, I want WR/AW and f/2.8 as well. Gotta justify the investment... ;-)

Well, the 11-18 may be even bigger... But as I said, a step-down adapter is OK for me, since I crop square most of the time anyway, which does away with vignetting problems.
