B&H Newsletter July 4, 2018

Nice writeup with pictures on the new lens in the newsletter emailed out today. Pictures are beginning to show the capabilities, interesting to see who has the first full review.

Remember that the FA 77 is a much older lens and so the R and D is all paid for, hence it is cheaper.

The DFA 50 is going to be bigger and will have quite a bit more edge sharpness at wider apertures. The FA 77 is really sharp in the center wide open, but the edges aren't that great. Obviously the in lens motor is a difference as well and should lead to better tracking auto focus. Finally, the biggest thing with the FA 77 is purple fringing and that should improve with the DFA 50.

The FA 50 is an OK lens -- a plastic fantastic. I never really warmed to it and ended up getting the DA *55. It just really needs to be stopped down to f2.8 to get decent edge sharpness and is pretty prone to flare (getting an after market hood can help, but it still flares pretty easily). The DFA 50 should be head and shoulders better than the FA 50.

I'm not sure if I am going to get this lens -- it just isn't a focal length that I'm excited about. On the other hand, I talked to my wife about the DFA 85 and she was ready to preorder it on the spot, sight unseen. So hopefully Pentax gets that project in gear and takes our money...
The fa 77mm was released in 1999 for around 900 dollars. Inflation to today, it would be 1300+.
The new DFA would combine the rendering of Pentax with the resolution of the Sigma Art. That is like the holy grail, something that is totally unique to Pentax.

Like many people here my first camera came with a 50mm standard lens (ME Super + Pentax-A 50/1.7). I've still got the lens, the camera didn't survive a dunking in a stream running through Die Hel (South Africa). I'm just trying to imagine what I'd have thought back in he early 80s if somebody had told me that that was the shape of things to come 35 years later. Probably excited, but wondering how I'd ever tame a beast like that

Once again, I can’t get the images to load on that part of his website, but if you click on any of the spinning placeholders, it will take you to his Flickr posts. I know he’s a professional, but looking at his images with the D FA*50/1.4 reminds me why the 50 was such a popular kit lens with SLRs. It is a versatile FL. The only problem with looking at these images is that it makes me want to change my mind and think about getting a copy.

You know you have $1.200 (American) worth of stuff you can sell* . . . Just do it.

* I have 10 or 12 50’s alone that I don’t use any more -

What are the chances of the DFA 50 being in stock after preorders are filled? The Japan Ricoh Imaging Facebook and online webstore, using google translates to the following, not sure what to make of it, if anything:

Ricoh Imaging Japan:
In addition, although it is very popular, HD PENTAX - D FA ★ 50mm F1.4 SDM AW, but if it is the current reservation at the online store it will be shipped after August. I am sorry, thank you for your understanding. It was saDa of online store charge.

Ricoh Imaging Store in Japan:
We have received an appointment that exceeds the assumption, and we plan to deliver it after August 2018 for orders after July 6, 2018 (Fri).
We apologize for the inconvenience caused to you by our customers, but thank you very much for your kind understanding.
