Of my last 2700 keepers, not one is taken at ƒ22 or ƒ32.

I have done in the past a few ƒ22 macros, but this isn't a macro lens. Which in away is quite sad, given that this lens appears to be a lot sharper than the 50 macro. You're going to be left with the decision, 50 macro, or shoot with this lens at minimum focusing distance and enlarge.

That's the one.

The DoF guide on my FA 50 shows ƒ16 will keep everything in focus from 8 feet to infinity using a hyperfocal setting. You can get to 6 feet with ƒ22.

You give up close half your resolution to go to f22, it's truly a desperation measure.

I feel like, and I'm sure someone will tell me I'm wrong, cameras on which this lens might be used have fast enough shutter speeds available that it's not going to be a major loss OR the user should be expected to bring an ND filter or some such method by which to use f16 acceptably when they might otherwise want f22. Also agreed that stopping down that far should be considered last resort due to the impact on image quality. It's just something I noticed.

New era, basically.
I think you're right - also, the only other reason for small apertures - increased dof - can now be achieved - and exceeded -by focus stacking - there's little need to stop down so far that diffraction undermines the reason why you bought a lens of this quality/cost.

Now go check maximum res on a $40 18-55 kit lens and compare that (knowing that the APSCkhit does somehow cover FF from about 35-55mm).

I can't believe grown up people actually discuss this about a F1.4 lens.

Why 16 versus 22? Less aperture blade weight?
Probably to maintain image quality by not letting the user go to an f stop where more severe diffraction is setting in.

There are so few modern lenses, one has to consider each of these lenses for multiple uses. You certainly have to discuss it if the only option. I guess I can wait for a 1.7. What do you think? 10 years, twenty, easy to say but not very practical in the Pentax world. It's the only modern prime, forget about the only modern 50. I

To reiterate, I didn't bring up the f16 min aperture of this lens because I would use f22 if it were there or would miss it or anything like that. I'm just noting a change from previous and how this lens "feels" like something very different from past offerings. Even the DA*55 goes down to f22.

Just put the 1.4 on it and you have 70mm ƒ22.

The Eeyores™ are always squeaking about diffraction at f22 and greater. Now The Eeyores™ squeak about the lack of f22 or greater. I'll bet most of the people buying this lens are buying it because it is a modern 50mm with f/1.4 with wonderful bokeh and will be shooting mostly at the wider range and probably won't even miss the f22 setting.

Yeah, it's break from the past. So is it not being a pancake lens. So is the new focusing ring motor and Kaf4 aperture control. So is not having a 49 or 52mm filter size.

I honestly - honestly - don’t remember using a smaller aperture than f/16 on any lens, ever. What would you shoot with a 50 at f/22?

I've shot a bit at f/22 on a 50 while doing night photography long exposure with light painting.. I needed to stop down all the way to get dark enough/ long enough shutter speed to finish light painting my subjects... but I guess that's a very special case and not everyone will be needing to stop down to f/22 regularly.

ND filters are your friend, FF.
