Do you really want to bring up the accelerator? There are plenty of folks who think that it is the opposite of advancement (I'm not one of them, but what it is doing is really the same thing that you would get by running your images through a decent noise reduction program).

2016 : Full frame 36Mp
2017: Apsc 24Mp
2018: Full frame 36 Mp
2019: Apsc 24Mp
2020: Logical progression => Full frame 72Mpixels (2 x 36 = 72)
2021: Logical progression => Apsc 48Mp (2 x 24)

Don't know why a 72Mp FF or 48Mp APS-C is a 'logical' progression. There are several updated cameras which didn't increase MP counts - Canon 1Dx Mk III has same 20Mp as prior model, Sony a9ii has same 24Mp as prior model, Nikon D780 kept the same 24Mp as the D750, etc. Nikon D6 is also rumored to keep 20Mp.

I could see a Ricoh full-frame DSLR using the Sony 42Mp BSI sensor that has been out a couple of years and might be available at a good cost. And the only rumor for the APS-C replacement due this year is the Sony 26Mp sensor.

I never suggested this. I suggested that the K-1 to K-1 mk2 transition was a mild set of tweaks vs. considering it a "new camera". I consider the K-5 to K-5 mk2 transition to be of greater weight than what was done with the K-1. Take every instance on its own merits and not some blanketing rule of thumb for all.

"facelift" was what was said when the K-1ii first came out, but once people understood implications of the 'accelerator' almost no one would still claim that it was a "mild set of tweaks" - and that is ignoring other sources in improvement, such as its improvement in focusing.

I regularly make use of my KP; I consider the 'accelerator' to be a major improvement, but regardless of what one thinks about it, we cannot ignore it. I was surprised when Pentax released a K-1 with it, but they claim it makes use of information not normally available in 'raw' files, and we should not ignore that statement.

Actually I think a logical progression wouldn't be a camera with a sensor resolution double that of the previous but, based on recently passed camera releases, a 2020 FF camera with 36Mp and a 2021 APS-C camera with 24Mp.
