I just wonder how many people are involved in this. How easy is it to shift resources from developing one lens to another. I'd like to see the management of such a process. Mostly, what we get is an interview with one person, the chief, holding a lens and telling us how good it is. I'd really appreciate some information on - for example - why exactly this lens was delayed. Was it an optical problem or a mechanical one, what type and magnitude. Of course, I don't need insight into business secrets, but just to know how they took one hurdle.

I think you're essentially right. My guess is that staffing is down to just Saori and his assistants.

They should take their time, we want them to be released only when they're good. I'd never want to see an engineer overruled.

I'm not waiting until my birthday in December 2019 for this lens ... time to look for something else.
I’d satisfy myself with a Sigma 8-16 in the meantime. Like the Hotel California (or was it Royston Vasey?) you’ll never leave. Well, maybe not.

Well, it looks like 11-18 isn't just a focal length, it's also a delay expressed in months. I expect this will push back much of the roadmap. I didn't need the 50 or the 11-18 but other lenses.

The 70-200 f4 was the next FF lens on the roadmap. "Spring 2019 or later". I think we'll be lucky to see it any time in 2019. The wide and ultrawide primes just said "2019 or later". I expect no sooner than 2020. Maybe Ricoh will surprise me and somehow regain ground but I think they have a single team approaching these lens projects sequentially, where a delay in 1 lens pushes everything else further back.
The system still has no cheap DFA50/1.7(1.8), 85 mm lenses and no any FF wide-angle primes shorter than 31 mm. The wide angle are covered with huge and expensive zoom Tamron design DFA15-30/2.8, very old FA31/1.8 and FA35/2. It's all. It's sad and funny.

That's exactly what I mean.

They're mad, and the structural engineers save their projects.

Im not a future buyer of this lens but it is frustrating to see all thoses lens release date postponed.
Of course as long as the final product quality is great, most of us will forgive Ricoh for the delay.

Shame... I was looking forward to having this lens by November, when I could have used it. For that trip I'll have to go with my current glass (which covers similar FoV) and wait a bit longer then... I'll still get it when it's released.

Hope it's a good sign in terms of quality this lens will deliver when ready. Looking at the new 50/1.4, IQ seems to be high on Ricoh's agenda, so I'm all for that!

Yes, it is true but bare in mind that they are also facing problem and undergo some changes in-house to fit the schrinking market, both in copiers and photo industry.

I was prepared for a delay, but man... 2019 hurts a lot.

Maybe Ricoh should talk to the third party lens developers and make their system attractive to them. If the consumers could buy third party lenses for Pentax, Ricoh would have more time to develop the best lenses out there. Meanwhile the base of Pentax users could grow instead of getting smaller. If users than want to upgrade to high end lenses, the new developments should be ready. Maybe this is a way to go.

Their scheme is to get us to buy both, even if we weren't planning to. So we get the 50 now since we can't get the 11-18, and then we have plenty of time to prepare to lay out another big chunk of change next year for the 11-18!
85mm will be out in the meantime, I doubt they are that evil and plan all of us to buy these 3 upcoming lenses.
Sigma 8-16 is perfect substitution and will be a keeper, at least on my side.
