There is a “Developmant Story” article on the Ricoh sure, where named Ricoh Imaging employees talk about how the lens was development. If we are to believe that the lens is actually a Tokina design, that would mean the whole article is a fabrication. It seems a bit far-fetched to me.

I actually have a fair amount of skepticism in asahiman’s comments, but I don’t see any good reason to believe this is not designed by Ricoh.

The pressing piece is the clue (together with mentioning heavy elements).
The patent is related to the DA55-300 PLM.

The other lenses with such development stories - the D FA* 70-200 and D FA 150-450 - are clearly associated with Ricoh Imaging by patents. They didn't do that for the Tamrons.

We would have to be pretty cynical to not believe it is all or mostly a Pentax creation.

As far as I can see, worrying about which manufacturer owns the patent to a lens is the antithesis of creating a good image? I just don't know what the fuss is all about?

Just negative Nancies and Salty Sallies making waves because someone (Ricoh/Pentax) didn't tell them what they were doing, lens development and production wise.

Pentax is close mouthed and since there are many things that can and do go wrong when creating new, highly technical products, it is better to under-promise and try to over-deliver, rather than fail in some or all of the promises you make.

If you don't promise anything, how can customers whine?

Yes I agree, but they will find a way to whine somehow!

The system still has no cheap DFA50/1.7(1.8), 85 mm lenses and no any FF wide-angle primes shorter than 31 mm. The wide angle are covered with huge and expensive zoom Tamron design DFA15-30/2.8, very old FA31/1.8 and FA35/2. It's all. It's sad and funny.
Wide and ultra-wide angle FF lens speaking, Pentax cannot compete with "getting old but still excellent" fast used AF Sigmas (20-24-28mm), and excellent manual Samyang/Laowa/Irix (11-12-14-15-20-24mm) products.
That's it, and so it sounds understandable that they don't prioritize such investments.

I'd say they can compete but it must be a careful entry. They will want to make sure it is a strong statement lens. They will slowly add lenses to their catalog but it is fantastic that existing old stock can fill the void in these areas. Pentax can't rush in a huge line of lenses in all kinds of focal lengths - they don't have the bandwidth to do it.

It is interesting that although so many here focus on the need for full frame primes their next lens appears to be a crop where they are already well supplied. I think it shows that Ricoh/Pentax is here for the long haul. No panic. Just producing what they can and what they think is needed.
