That nobody buys compact cameras with tiny, 1/2.3" or 1/1.7", sensors any more?

I dunno, Nikon just announced the new Coolpix B600, A1000 compact cameras... I was all excited when I saw it was only 16Mp and the byline read about a reduced focal length, because I thought it might be APSC or 1" sensor... nope another 1/2.3" job. But at any rate, Nikon must think there is a market for them, or they wouldn't have built them.

Ahead of their time, right, being much smaller and able to pivot?

They went Medium Format to undercut Hasselblad and PhaseOne, and eventually Fuji came to realize it was a good idea, too.

They went Full Frame, even when Tony Northrup derided the idea, and now Panasonic are getting into it.

Killed their compact line and yet Nikon are still apparently releasing new models, presumably because they're stuck with a plant producing them.

Somebody manufactured 8.6 million fixed lens cameras in 2018, even without the GRIII available to inflate numbers. They outnumbered MILCs 2:1. Some of those will be Canon M100s and $1000 1" compacts from Panasonic, but not more than 8 million of them. Sony keeps releasing new sub m43 sensors as well. Just because the market for compact cameras is a fifth of what it once was, doesn't mean that it doesn't have a pulse.

I think peak compact camera unit sales was 110,000,000 in 2010, then 80,000,000 in 2011, 48,000,000 by 2013 and a rapid decline to 10,000,000 by 2015. So a loss of a bit more than 100,000,000 annual unit sales (87%) in just 6 years.

The iPhone was introduced in June, 2007 . . . . The below-linked article is already two years old.

All true, RGlasel..

Even if they plunge down to 5.5 million this calendar year at the same rate of decline, someone's still making money off 'em.

Ricoh could even go further premium with resuscitating 6x7 although I dont see that happen.

Yes, it's possible, but I reckon it's profit because they're mature products - the R&D was paid off years ago.

Anyway, the raw numbers sold have plunged so much nobody would be celebrating.

Probably. It mainly depends on how well they judge the market. If they produce 9 million and sell 8, that's a problem.

But that difference can't be due to the DSLRs, because Ricoh is putting it on "reduction of lineup"/"narrowing down of products". And they kept their DSLR line intact.
It looks like the WG-M2 is out of the program.
