HD PENTAX-D FA* 50mm F1,4 SDM AW beats Sigma 50mm F1,4 DG HSM Art in review

I guess this is a question that has been on some people's minds:

HD PENTAX-D FA* 50mm F1,4 SDM AW compared to Sigma 50mm F1,4 DG HSM Art

Pentax 50mm 1.4 * 2018 Review Part 3 of 3 - Conclusion - YouTube

The google transscript:

now for landscape art these two cameras actually perform pretty interesting very interesting basically it looks quite identical at one point but once I go to the edge of both cameras you could tell that the Pentax edge to edge is actually a lot sharper than the Nikon and Sigma and that's just kind of like there you go guys there you go not just only the best landscape body out there the best 50mm 1.4 this thing has better edge to edge sharpness than this lens and that's just amazing guys so for the last test alot of you guys are probably thinking to yourself how it does this compare an outdoor scene with Sun coming down yes you guys are thinking that right now and I have to say all your Pentax scene is out there this is when you guys have to I'm just kidding guys you guys actually want this match yes you guys want basically the Nikon and Sigma doesn't handle flare that well pretty much so all in all I think on a day the Pentax K-1 with the new 50 millimeter 1.4 star glass lens it's a much better camera then this Sigma 50 millimeter 1.4 with a d-810

Very positive review. No surprises about the superior flare control relative to Nikon and Sigma glass.

Very happy to see this too. I'm starting feel some serious LBA building.

By the way this has already been posted about on: FA 50mm vs D-FA★ 50mm review by the CameraVille - PentaxForums.com

LBA for 1 lens? Bring on the whole prime series. Not after a decade but two years maximum.

You can help with that by buying the D FA* 50mm f/1.4, and the following D FA* lenses

I've compared a number of images from both lenses, the sigma Art is very good in a way that it render excellent images, but the Pentax D-FA*50 is a step up from the sigma Art, especially with regards to sharpness wide open (subject separation) I like the contrast and colors better on the Pentax.

According to the MTF curves I've seen, the Pentax is sharper than the Sigma Art, which is an incredible achievement by the Ricoh designers.

Very, very impressive.

There may be situations where the Sigma's background bokeh will be less busy or have less fringing in the outer quarters of the frame, but the Pentax could be remarkable in the central half.

It seems to be slightly better. The Sigma art glass is usually technically excellent when it comes to sharpness and aberration control but lacks a little bit in rendering (in my opinion). I think Pentax went all out with their 50 and it looks to be one of the best out there and I like the “look” of images better than the art. Hopefully they get the 85 out and make a wide angle prime and 35 at some point. I never liked the rendering of the Sigma 35, despite how good it is on paper.

That seems like an inevitable consequence of greater edge to edge sharpness, so I think we can live with it

What is quite obvious here is also the significantly worse loss of microcontrast of the Sigma in this situation, resulting in a much "flatter" image. It really seems that the multiple effect of great coatings are much bigger than I anticipated.

I do believe that in order to achieve the creamiest possible bokeh (and that is where the DFA* shines) absolute correction is not helpful.

I laugh at his grammar too sometimes, but he seems like a nice guy and I respect that he’s open to talking about Pentax gear and comparing it to other brands. His testing methodology is improving with each video and this comparison answered a lot of questions that I would have if I was trying to decide whether I should buy this lens or not.
