They think it is a balanced review. If it were a Sony lens they would not be looking for fringing, They would shoot and easy situation and say, look you don't see any fringing. Now they shoot an impossible situation and go out of their way to point out barely visible fringing which is really irrelevant to the entire shot and that can be found in any non-apochromatic lens, however good. They are setting the lens up for a bad review. Barney Again of course. For the final review (if they do one) he will call in the help of "I have a PHD in physics man".

I've seen the light!

I'll be returning my Pentax D-FA* 50mm 1.4 Star lens later today as I've discovered it has horrendous longitudinal CA - I hadn't noticed it until now but now my eyes have been opened

DPR have a very long tradition of anti-Pentax bias and this article is no exception. The bias is easy to spot. I sometimes wonder if the reviewers are really anti-Pentax, just ignorant, or want to pander to the majority of their readers, who seem to need any justification that they can find to bolster their thoughts that their own CaNikony system and choices is the best one around.

The chromatic aberrations are not a big problem and are over-emphasised here.
The weight of the K-1 is a product of Pentax, unlike most other brands, building their products to a reasonable standard rather than making them as light as possible. A 50/1.4 with such a complex optical design is obviously going to be heavy but that's unavoidable and buyers are aware of it and will take it into account when deciding to buy or not.
I think it's very likely that Pentax did work with Tokina on this lens but I'm absolutely lost as to why that might be a bad thing. Maybe the design came from both companies, maybe Pentax just licensed it to Tokine so that they could make money selling it for Canon and Nikon mounts. Does it matter?

I don't understand why RICOH lets this happens. Amazon's attitude is defamatory

I counted "heavy"4 times..and "bulky "2 times. "Expensive "3 times and "sharp " only one time.
This is not a lens review it is just a hate hands on no mention of the mechanical system or to the optical quality or the bokeh..,macro contrasts, the coat etc..

Because it's not really defamatory - just biased - and because they can't fight it (any attempt would likely backfire, badly).

It is. Basically they started their "opinions" with many cons, and these cons moreover are "by design" in every lens of the competitors in the same class....cost..weight...Lateral CA:

The OTUS 55:

from Camera Labs

The SIGMA 50 ART:

from blogdozack

The Nikon 58:

from blogdozack

Andrea, I agree that they've been unfair to the point of misleading.

Yep, there's no retaliation possible here.

It's not Nikon's Marketing head ringing up DPR and threatening to halve their advertising spend.

It's not Sony emailing to cancel that writer's junket in Hawaii in November.

You can do what you like to the brands that don't matter.

I stopped visiting the DPR site about a year ago. Nothing worth viewing or reading there. Writers are only interested in the payoffs for positive reviews that they get from the big boys.

If you want to retaliate, write to Amazon and tell them you aren't giving them any more money until they call off their pit bulls.

This is not in the least bit surprising. A local camera shop has a sign above the cashier listing the camera review sites and youtube channels to avoid because they are causing no end of trouble and DPR is one of them. You often see people come in and try a camera they seen on these sites and it's completely different.

The new 50mm f1.4 is not light (in weight) but it is not that bad. Its very sharp and nice colour rendition, no regrets.

I finally looked at the size and weight in detail. Woah... It's larger than the 16-50 - size isn't too far off but the weight... Only my DA 60-250 is heavier in my current line up.

My Sony Zeiss 24-70mm f/2.8 ZA SSM in A-mount weighs in at 961g without caps, and is 83mm wide by 110mm long (at the wide angle setting). That's extremely close (though very slightly heavier, wider and longer) than the D FA501.4. It's a lump of a lens to carry, but perfectly doable, and no problem for two or three hours at a time. I wouldn't want it hanging from my neck all day...
