The 15mm Ltd. is f/4. At this focal length, a one stop difference in max. aperture DOES cost that much.

The amazing Heliar for Leica M - 15/4.5.
Color Scopar - 21/4. Pentax A15/3.5.

DA15 is almost pancake. F/4 is good.

Added to that, Canon's lens covers the 36x24mm frame. That adds plenty of cost as well. There's no analog available that I know of, but a 24mm f/4.0 lens that is very small would be the appropriate comparison.

I'm really excited about this lens, though I'm concerned that the hood is (appears to be?) non-detachable and that will make it bulkier than would be ideal.

I want this lens, and the Limited lens case, asap.

is nowhere near that price, and is a great lens. But it's big and heavy. The Limited 15 is at f=4 to keep the size down, I'm sure.

Cheers,

I just can't shake the feeling that the 15mm limited is going to be a disappointment, and I don't know why, exactly... What I'm suspecting is that it may not provide noticable IQ improvement over the DA 12-24 @ 15mm - 15mm is near the 12-24's sweet spot. Given the choice between a 15mm limted and the exceptional and more versatile 12-24 - if the IQ is similar or the same - I don't see the 15 selling very well.

I suppose it could have better edge distortion and edge sharpness than the 12-24, but edge qualities never were very important to me, maybe that's why I feel underwhelmed about the potential impact of this lens.

Anyone disagree? Help me get more excited about this lens, I want to be!

To a lesser degree, I feel the same way about the DA* 55 1.4 and the new 30 - why couldn't we have a new 85mm and a new, say, 135mm prime instead? The 30 - 50 FL is already pretty well represented in the lineup... And I know the 55 is supposed to be the digital 1.5 crop 85mm equiv/replacement, but that's really only true for FOV, not perspective.

I for one would welcome a fairly wide fairly fast sealed lens. 55/1.4 may be too long for my kind of shooting...
Not on my wishlist, which means ofcourse I will get it sooner rather than later

I'm really excited about the 15L and the 55*. My 21L is my primary lens when hiking but I frequently want something wider, but still compact enough to take anywhere. If it can improve on the 21L in CA and corner sharpness, that would be even better, but that's probably asking for too much. The 15L + 35L should make for a great lightweight hiking/travel combo.

The FA50 is my most used lens for portrait photography, but it's kind of soft at 1.4, especially on the K20D. I'm hoping the new 55* will feel a lot more like a Canon 85/1.8 on a Canon 5D, one of my favorite combos. I know it's not the same perspective, but I'm still hopeful.

I guess I never got to like zoom lenses, so I'm really glad to see Pentax come out with cool new prime lenses in my favorite focal lengths.

We will have to wait and see, won't we? This is harsh reality, since I am aching for an excuse to buy a new Limited.

The exact image properties will matter a lot as to whether this lens is a must-have or a bit of an also-ran. Edge qualities are important to me for enough of my shooting to make it a decisive factor. That's why I like my DA16-45. But lately I am tending towards primes more and more. If the DA15 Limited has better IQ then it wins on that score and wideness and size, losing in the comparison only on flexibility (and price?).

You're losing me here. Perspective one can change by moving. FOV one can change only by changing lenses. So surely having the old 85mm equivalent it's more important for the FOV to be the same? And even better if the IQ is the same!

Me, I've got the FA43 and FA77, which pretty well covers it. Only if the DA*55 is astounding will it be enticing.
