I don't understand why release of the KP, which came 11 months after release of the K-1, should be "irritating".
I expected the APSC line to continue evolving with so-called „flaghip“ cameras. But the KP didn't fit in to that. It wasn't an improved successor to the K3ii. Also at that time, for me it seemed to come out of nowhere. However, that's my personal experience, I'm not saying that others have percieved it like that.

is Nikon’s new IBIS strictly their own development
It's hard to say, without seeing a picture of how it works. I have to say though that a lot of the in-body IBIS systems with magnet-mounted sensors from Sony, Olympus, Panasonic and Pentax do seem to share a certain family resemblance. The resemblance may be due to a number of things, but patent licensing or sourcing those assemblies from the same place seems likely. (A similar story, perhaps, to the ubiquitous Copal shutters found in Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Sony etc).

So I would be very surprised to see Nikon go totally their own way on IBIS, and implement something novel.

It seems to me Ricoh is testing things out on lesser models. K-s series first flip screen and wifi, selfie mode and leds. KP was the accelerator chip and selective grip. K70 perhaps the kaf4 mount?
K1 is the flagship. Can you have 2 flagships or is that an oxymoron?
If the kp hadn't come out the k3ii would not be conflicted as the apsc flagship now. It was released 3 years ago and people would say it's time for a refresh and that's what's coming only 4 years has become the new refresh time. The nikon d500 was 6 years after the d300s.

The irritation comes simply from the KP being a very nice camera , but not the Apsc Flagship.
The K-1 appeared as the FF Flagship , and now we have the newly released K-1II being the Flagship for FF replacing the K-1.
The problem is that the Apsc K-3II Flagship is no longer in production and all we have is the KP that's a recent addition to the Apsc lineup to choose from.
NO recent Apsc Flagship !
I think maybe Pentax has forced Apsc Pentax Flagship seekers, to go for the KP and has squeezed the daylights out of its sales , and the Ageing K-3II for sales knowing there is nothing else to choose from at the moment......lol
Intentional marketing ? Accidental happening ? Who knows.

This is why I refer to it as being Held Hostage by Pentax !
Either get the K-3II that is aging and no longer in production , knowing something surely is better in the making.....OR.....Buy the KP that isn't a Apsc Flagship !
Hostage I say....Hostage !.....lol.

I made my choice and bought 2 KP's and will have to live with it for at least two years. Im still curious as to what is coming at Photokina.

I don't think it is an oxymoron as different product lines does not make for a conflict in terminology and classification. Some people (like myself) really don'y want to carry the weight of a FF rig but still need a "pro grade" camera to stand up to hard operating conditions.
If I were a betting man I would say they are going for a successor to the K3 platform in late 2019. My K3 is still under warranty and has a lot of clicks left in it, so I have no need to upgrade for a couple years. What I really need is that *ist 11-18mm to come out...

As for me KP is strange move...The niche of this camera is not obvious ....Pentax never produced cameras between amateur and semi-pro.

It is completely obvious.
For years people here moaned for a small camera which would go very well with Limiteds.
Ricoh did.
And people now moan 'cos it ain't the flagship they wanted.

Well, you can't please everyone.

In a Pentaxforums interview a Ricoh representative stated the benefits of ASP-C as compactness and speed. The KP is designed to cater for customers who want a compact DSLR to use with their Limited lenses. I would expect they are working on a replacement for the K3 line which will embrace the characteristics of speed. High burst rates and faster AF. Something of a sports/birding camera similar to the Nikon D500.

This may be Pentax's attempt to please both those who want a smaller camera and those who do not want a MILC.

Yet the k70 is smaller than the kp and the ks2 is smaller still. Both recently released when the kp came out.

95% of Pentax APS-C cameras are smaller than KP.
KP is one of the biggest APS-C camera of Pentax for last time.
KP is almost the same as K-3.

Pentax K-3 dimensions: 131.5x100x77.5 mm (camera body only, excluding protrusion)
Pentax KP dimensions: 131.5x101x76 mm (camera body only, excluding protrusion)

Only old K10D and K20D are a bit bigger 141,5×101×70 mm

Do you remember *ist D ?
129 × 94,5 × 60 mm - it was really small.

I always saw the KP as a mid-level camera, older brother of the K-70, but not the new head of the APS-C family. Targeting travel, outdoors, Pentax enthusiasts.

Hopefully when Ricoh do replace the K-3II, it will include enough new tech to make it truly distinctive from the KP. A big upgrade to systems like SAFOX 11, PRIME V, the 86k metering sensor, video, and even the accelerator chip would make it clear who was the new APS-C boss.
