Another recap of what I'm expecting from the Photokina:

3- Reworked DA* 16-50 and DA* 50-135
9- The new GR
as for 16-50 and 50-135 - new motor and HD coating - it is all.

3 and 9 are already rather big announcement for Ricoh...

From 2002-2012 I used Canon compacts, I think I had two different ones from the Elph/Ixus family. 6 or 8 megapixels. I thought they were great. They had zoom lenses and IBIS. But I didn't really know anything about photography at all. To this day I couldn't tell you the range of the zoom or the aperture. I prioritized pocketability over everything. It was very nice to have a camera I could take anywhere.

In 2012 I got a K-30. Even with a kit lens it was kind of a revelation in image quality and control. So I can see both sides. Now my primary travel kit is a K-3ii with a 15mm and 40mm LTD. I could see myself doing a lot with a GRIII with recent Pentax DSLR image quality, features and controls, a 28mm equivalent lens, but the size of a couple decks of cards. I'm comfortable with my DSLR, but even for me there are times when I leave it behind and use the phone.

The only question is would a GRIII like that be worth spending the marriage equity to get better results over my Pixel cell phone?
Basicly why the rest of the world only wants a smartphone and nothing else.

I choose smart phones mainly on the camera it contains {any of them can send and receive phone calls and text messages}. I have always found the interface awkward, but the photo produced is usually good; compact cameras are better because of the controls - my Q-7 gives me even better control of lenses. I'm not sure whether I personally would feel that a GRiii would meet the "not a lame point and shoot camera" claim in the OP ... because that is where personal opinion comes in.

This would mean PSII as it doesn't require IBIS?
Pixel shift uses the IBIS system to move the sensor between shots, so IBIS is required for pixel shift. Of course the quote OoKU responded to mentioned SRII and Pixel Shift II. The 2s could be a problem. We could speculate if it will have SR and PSII or SRII and PS.

Counting the "better results" reason, there are at least six reasons for standalone cameras like the GRIII:

1) Image quality: A larger sensor has much better dynamic range, low-light performance and resolution.

2) Physical ergonomics: Standalone cameras offer easier-to-hold bodies for higher-volume, longer-duration photography sessions.

3) Image control workflows: Standalone cameras offer more direct and easier to use controls for exposure, AF, mode, etc.

4) Compatibility with accessories (flash, tripods, remotes, panoheads, etc.): Dedicated cameras open a world of photographic add-ons beyond just the selfie-stick.

5) Gadget-collectibility: For some people, standalone cameras are a new toy or collectible item that are intrinsically fun to buy, learn, and use.

6) Social signal: For some people, carrying a standalone camera is a signal to friends, family, photographic subjects, and the world that they are "serious" photographers. The brand (whether it's iconoclastic Pentax, popular Canikon, or exclusive red dot Leica), physical size (bigger is better, right?), and craftsmanship of the device say something about the owner.

Let's hope it's something exciting. Pity a bit too late, already moved on. But one of many things Pentax is good at is to make people feel sentimental about the brand, you just keep on checking with hopes to see something wonderful from Pentax. (Marketing team should really consider some controlled leaks to keep people eyes on Pentax)

It must be either very up to competition new line of cameras or something very unique and different announced at Photokina. Keeping my fingers crossed for something exciting.

The existing 16-50 is the weakest of the DA* lenses in my opinion. That would be potentially welcome news.

I have likely seen more of these than the vast majority of users (I convert lenses to screw drive). I don't see major issues but the performance wide open at 16mm is not as stunning as it should be. The 17-70 consistently impressed me more but it wasn't 16mm and wasn't 2.8 so it is hard to compare.

Do you want high IQ at 2.8 with zoom at 16 mm? Do you know such Pentax lens?
It has two weakness - very high CA and bad motor. IMO

LOL - Yes I know I'm asking for the moon!

I like my DA 20-40 ltd in that respect but not nearly that wide. I already pointed out that the 17-70 f/4 is lovely but not 16 nor 2.8. I like my DA 15 - but not a zoom and not 2.8 and so the list goes on. It is a lens that can be improved that's all I'm saying.

How about the 14mm/f2.8 wider and better.
