Pentax products at Photokina - disappointment or admiration?

As for me -
Pentax announcement before Photokina is some kind of disappointment.
We had been waiting for DA*60-250/4 for 2.5 year. Fantastic price. 1300 euro.
New kit lenses with plastic bayonet - who cares about it.
DA15/4 will be only close to summer, 2009.:ugh:
Ring-flash is rather special.

I like Pentax K-m...But I don't need it.
DA*55/1.4 is ONLY good news now.

No information about DA*30.
No new lenses in roadmap AT ALL, except abstract super telephoto.
No K20D's upgrade. No FF developement's announcement.

Post your opinion.

My opinion: if Pentax/Samsung wanted to announce a FF (or any kind of plan to make a new model, FF or not), they wouldn't announce it prior to the show.

What would a pre-announcement of an announce be good for?

"Hey guys, be there at the next show because we are going to announce the new FF 28MP K1D... ooops did I just say that out loud?!"

Pre-show announcements are usually for models which will be demonstrated during the show and go on sell just after.

New models/lenses plans for 2009 (if any) will be announced during the show.

Well they have not pre-announced anything, officially.

All the info posted here is based on leaks.

The official press conference is planned for Monday.

ah initial list price.... not streetprice and certanly not streetprice after a while.
Other zooms in this range are faster but they miss 10mm at the wide and 50mm at the long end....

Either those on a budget or those who like to save weight. Ever wondered why planes and helicopters and cars are made of a lot of platic nowadays???

twas only mentioned for the first time half a year ago as a future lens....

I want the ring-flash, like the 55/1.4, don't really care about the DA15/4 since i have the 12-24..
The K-m and the new plastic lens does low down the weight, and if the glass is good, it will be great for landscape photographer, less weight for hiking is always good. Not to mention the newcomers from P&S, who used to lighter cameras.

They don't accounce FF/upgrade developments doesn't mean they are not working on it tho..:ugh:

I'd be alright with a mockup under glass at their Photokina booth, kinda like Sony did a few years back with their A900 mockup - and look how long it took for the actual product to be announced! Just let us know something's coming!

It looks nice except if it still uses AA, the grip and hence the body could have been smaller and lighter than it should be. Well, how much weight it will add for four AA NiMHs if the users want rechargeables?

There is still about two days to come, maybe something *may* still happen!

New lenses are always a plus for any system, and the 15mm Limited looks like a nice replacement for the DA 14mm. The macro flash fills a hole in the flash line-up. The low-end K-M body may attract new users and serve as the "digital K1000" entry level camera that has been discussed for years.

The disappointments are:

1. Glacially slow development and production time for new lenses. How long has it taken to get the 60-250mm into production? - over 2 1/2 years and it still isn't on shelves this month or even next month. They really need to solve the problem of the inability to get products to the market. I gave up waiting for this lens over a year ago and went with a different system. Still no fast normal lens (DA* 30) and no fast super-telephotos.

2. Lack of advanced pro-sumer products. The K20D missed the Christmas 2007 sales season and the market leaders have continued to move forward in 2008. Canon, Nikon and Olympus have all upgraded AF performance in the last year or two, while Pentax is stuck in neutral. While the Samsung sensor was a step forward from the Sony 10 MP sensor, the new sensors from Canon, Sony and Nikon have superior high ISO performance. Megapixels alone isn't going to cut it in this market.

I understand that Pentax isn't prepared to compete in the pro market, but the advanced pro-sumer market could be a profitable niche for them if they get their act together. They need better AF, at least 5 fps frame rates, a 3" high resolution LCD and superior high ISO performance to stay competitive. I don't think they have the ability to produce a decent line of full frame lenses in this decade, so they better find a way to do this with the current APS-C format.

It's still too early to be disapointed or not IMHO. Let's wait for the official announcement. Now to be frank, from all the leaks, I'm not very excited by the new products. 60-250/4 too late too expensive, K-m, good but not what I want, ring-flash, ok but not really needed, da15/4 not needed... The DA*55/1.4 interests me a lot, same for the da*30.
The teleconverter is maybe the product I'll take first so I wouldn't need the 60-250/4 and replace it with my 50-135/2.8+the new tc.

The K-m is intriguing. If some fundamentals have been upgraded (AE accuracy, AF speed, jpeg processing, etc.) it may be more interesting and a hint of things to come. If not, that will be sad because it would only show that Pentax has not made great technological progress in years...

not a chance - you are expecting cost adding features in a lowest cost camera supplied w/ kit lenses w/ plastic bayonettes ?

If the fps limitaton was on the electronic side it *may* be fairly cheap to solve that one.
