.... add a few Pentax tweaks and this could be the improvement users are looking for here
Not only what Pentax users are looking for, it would also grab much more general attention than using the same good old 24MP sensor with a few more tweaks...

It should be noted that Samsung is ramping up image sensor production big time already with the aim to better compete with Sony - only so far all this has been about embedded devices, cars, industries and mainly phone camera sensors. So they have the published goal to cut into Sonys sensor market share.

That now they would want to leave a mark on Sonys large sensor marketshare is quite a logical consequence then.

This all is the same situation as with DSLM. Monopoly markets do draw in competition after a while.

This is interesting speculation.

It would be nice to see some kind of new innovation in camera sensors. There hasn't really been a big splash (in my opinion) since we transitioned into the current trend of high dynamic range at low ISO's with the Sony technology and that's been a while. I also think the sensor in the Sony a9 is a revolution, but not when it comes to image quality.

Although we focus on the sensor part of the rumor, the other part on the processing unit is also quite interesting, if not more. It seems this unit could be the Samsung Exynos 9810. This would open a lot of possibilities, like running a system based on Android. Meaning the possibility to add functions and features through apps... I know, it's a very long shot, but it's a rumor thread isn't it ?

Yes, It had a specialised app which would trigger the shutter when a baseball batter hit the ball - automatically. Kind of point-and-let-it-shoot.

I would prefer a proper touchscreen coupled to a light and not open android version over new apps related to our usage. With Android google would not only know where you are but also the color of your new car or measurements of your lover...

Now THIS is what I would like to see. The Sony smooth reflections application is brilliant, but has a terrible user interface and so Sony scrapped the whole application idea on their newer cameras. Manufacturers need to figure out ways to integrate applications like smartphone manufacturers have been doing for years.

But no, I was more thinking about apps allowing you to directly share your pictures on social media, or send them by email, or to some kind of cloud storage. For those who use LR, you could run LR CC to import, classify and tags your picture directly from your camera... If you use the GPS, you directly have Google maps on the camera to tag or find your locations... We can also think of more specialized app like one to do focus stacking or tethering... It would be way more flexible than the current system.

But those of us who would rather have more money in our pockets than features we'd rarely use, will all be crying like babies if they do that.

To be honest, I'm not sure it would cost significantly more than the current system which has more or less to be redone for each camera.

It would open the way to a common system for all camera, with features being enabled or disabled in software depending on what the hardware is able to support. In the same way to what we already see with Android or iOS. It would be less hassle for the user to deal with a common system than specific firmware. It would also be much more efficient for Pentax R&D to only have to work and develop a common piece of software shared by all camera, only updtaing the driver, than having to juggle with multiple software that are hardware specific. For example, if they correct a bug, they only have to develop a single that would solve the issue for all cameras... Or like we have recently see with KAF4 support. RP would only had had to include support in the common firmware, instead of having to fix multiple firware, and all cameras hardware compatible with KAF would have had support from day 1.

So, it's not only the app, but also a question of being more efficient for RP at developing their siftware as well as being more useful and less hassle for the user.

I have an Android phone, and I do not want Android on my camera. I'd rather have it work properly, thank you very much.
