To be honest, I'm not sure it would cost significantly more than the current system which has more or less to be redone for each camera.
It would open the way to a common system for all camera, with features being enabled or disabled in software depending on what the hardware is able to support. In the same way to what we already see with Android or iOS. It would be less hassle for the user to deal with a common system than specific firmware. It would also be much more efficient for Pentax R&D to only have to work and develop a common piece of software shared by all camera, only updtaing the driver, than having to juggle with multiple software that are hardware specific. For example, if they correct a bug, they only have to develop a single that would solve the issue for all cameras... Or like we have recently see with KAF4 support. RP would only had had to include support in the common firmware, instead of having to fix multiple firware, and all cameras hardware compatible with KAF would have had support from day 1.
So, it's not only the app, but also a question of being more efficient for RP at developing their siftware as well as being more useful and less hassle for the user.
