Why would they go into rangefinder cameras? Ah, they did, didn't they?

As for the 'why?' I will copy and paste here the comments made by Karfreit to a report published by Mirrorless Rumors on the Zenit M:
QuoteOriginally posted by Karfreit:
This is the project of Дмитрий Анатольевич Медведев [Dmitry Anatolyevich Medvedev], Russia's Prime minister, and long time Leica user. This is the reward to him from Putin, for loyalty but also a move to rebirth KMZ plant by bringing to the market commercial products and that way secure the income so the plants can resign from government subsidies and finance themselves, and by the way other projects for Russian government and military. Rostec conglomerate is responsible for the production of military optical equipment, ranging from gun viewfinders to spy satellites and from optical fibers for military systems to thermal imaging and infrared cameras for tanks and other military vehicles to thermal and infrared targeted missiles.

So omitting the marginal Russian oligarchs market, who by the way probably will get this camera as a gift from Medvedev or Putin (as a proof of Putin efficient rebuilding of Russian prestige through the return of old Russian brands and factories), the main market is targeted at the West, and of course at Europe.

They are using the old soviet times nostalgia especially so alive in middle eastern countries in Europe. KMZ knows exactly that they will not sell too many Zenit M units, all they want is to promote their own lenses and sell them in big quantities, because there is laying the real money, just look how the sales of manual Chinese cheap lenses increased in the last 5 years, especially for mirrorless enthusiast cameras.

In short: (i) national pride and (ii) marketing tool to promote and sell KMZ-manufactured lenses.

...if Ricoh is actually involved in this, I'm not sure if I'm going to keep supporting the Pentax brand. This is a little disturbing to me. Hopefully this rumor turns out to be false.

What, you would jump ship to some other system if Ricoh does a rebadge/update to the K-1 with a Zenit label glued on? I'm kind of interested in seeing where this goes. Probably nowhere as it doesn't seem very likely at all.

Wow! I was aware they made K-mount lenses but this is great information, thanks. My musing was more, "I wonder if they'll make new and autofocus lenses" but I definitely did not specify that. Thanks again for the great info.

Out of curiosity, why would this be a deal breaker for you?

Where did you find this info? I've heard that it would be Zenit-M 50/1.0 kit and nothing else. The price of such kit is 5000-6000 euro.
There are indeed 500 Zenit M cameras, bundled with the Zenitar 35mm f/1, of which 450 silver cameras and 50 black ones. Price is said to be €5,500.

There are three lenses in the database of the Zenit M firmware: 35mm f/1 but also 21mm f/2.8 and 50mm f/1.

A prototype of the Zenitar 21mm f/2.8 in Leica M mount was showcased at Photokina.

Apparently the Zenitar 50mm f/1 is still in limbo.

If it will be K-1 in body made by KMZ, it would be the same limited edition camera for collectors and for presents of friends of Medvedev.

Ugly lenses.... It seems to me 21/2.8 is Leica's optical design...

Maybe we will get some Helios classics redone in native K mount.

Are you serious about this statement or are you just posting to be posting? So you want to control which companies Pentax can do business with?

But of course I want to control who Pentax does and doesn't work with, so they can stop being DOOMED.

I probably overreacted, but it just rubs me the wrong way to see Pentax involved in a deal to make cameras designed as gifts for oligarchs like the Zenit M was.
