I agree with this part.

My recollection is that registration has been either just before or after the camera is announced; I have a hard time believing Ricoh would announce a camera just after Photokina, but GRRRR is all they announced during it.

there's also the BJ-11 mentioned. And the BJ-10 was not for a slr, so R02010 might be the GRIII

Do you remember the camera Ricoh Imaging sent for certification to radiocommunication authorities, which bore the codename R01010 and was actually the Pentax K-1 Mark II?

There is now another one and its codename is R02010.

How much time elapsed between certification of R1010 and K-1II announcement ?

Have we had anything else that could be the K3 II successor? The K-1 upgrade makes me think that is to hold us over a bit longer on the full frame side, and this would make sense to be the new crop camera we know is in the works. It also makes sense to save these goodies up for the 100th anniversary and next year's shows to hopefully have some press that's a combination of anniversary - 100 years for any camera company is pretty neat for the industry, so people might notice that regardless, and then coordinate it with some top end product releases.

The whole purpose of a manufacturer's model number is that it is unambiguous. Makers may label the same product differently for each market, while the model "code" stays the same through all phases of the product lifecycle.

R01010 was registered by Postel on 15 March 2018. Pentax K-1 II had been announced on 22 February.

Unless the rationale was that anything released at Photokina would be drowned out by the noise surrounding all those full frame mirrorless systems. It was only Ricoh that have a was not the only company that had a quiet Photokina. Olympus and Sony chose not to launch anything there. Let's face it. Whatever Ricoh released would have been back page news.
Actually the GR-III seemed to get pretty good coverage.

The BJ-11 was an earlier registration, assumed to correspond to the GRIII.

New Ricoh BJ-11 battery charger registered in South Korea (for the new GR?) - Pentax Rumors

Only if they feel Photokina is actually important to their success. It gets lots of news and press coverage but I'm not sure Ricoh really cares about that. My memory might be dim but it seems to me Ricoh has made most announcements either at CP+ or completely independent of any trade show. They do not seem to feel the photography trade shows are very important.

Could be, maybe the actual K1 replacement wasn't quite ready so they gave the K1 a minor update a la K1 II. Now they release a K2, competitor to the D850 for 2499.99 usd.

I'm puzzled why Bluetooth connectivity is needed for a DSLR, unless it is to replace IR remotes. Bandwidth is far too slow for tethering at any range and the tradeoff to increase the range is to reduce bandwidth. The primary benefits of Bluetooth are low power consumption and making quick connections, although IR remotes beat Bluetooth in both categories.

Thank you Mistral for prompt reply, I assume it is registration of the GRIII then. I am curious to know how this R02010 code will be decyphered !
