Ricoh Imaging R02010 (code name)

Do you remember the camera Ricoh Imaging sent for certification to radiocommunication authorities, which bore the codename R01010 and was actually the Pentax K-1 Mark II?

There is now another one and its codename is R02010.

It's time for wild speculations!

Yes, it was.

Some people even deciphered the R01010 codename as follows:
  • R for Royal when K is for King
  • then 0 = space/hyphen
  • then 1
  • then 0 = space/hyphen
  • then 10 = 2 in binary
hence R01010 <==> K-1 II.

So using the same scheme on R02010 we get K-2 II. What happened to R02000 or is it R02001?

Right after Photokina seems like a strange time to start preparing for a new, unknown to us, camera; more likely to be something we already know about.

Well, let's see...2 + 1 is 3, and there's three zeroes in the codename, so K-3 III?

Hopefully it's the K-3II successor.

Unless the rationale was that anything released at Photokina would be drowned out by the noise surrounding all those full frame mirrorless systems. It was only Ricoh that have a was not the only company that had a quiet Photokina. Olympus and Sony chose not to launch anything there. Let's face it. Whatever Ricoh released would have been back page news.

At least it would have been news .... or Pentax could have said in the interview that they weren't quite ready to announce a SLR. A camera announced anytime soon, away from lots of press, would be back page news anyway.

Well, they did exhibit the GRIII prototype, which is a fairly major release. It looks great and I'm almost certainly going to get one. . . . Unless I'm distracted by this R02010, that is.

My money is on a new Theta model or a K-3 successor. I don't think analyzing the code number will reveal much, because the whole point of having a code number is so that the it's not clear what model it is.
