15mm DA - Very odd

It appears that the 15mm DA has a permanent hood which is retractable into the body. It sits between the barrel and the focus ring.

The problem is, in its retracted state as seen at Photokina, it still appears to protrude out from the front element, thereby blocking any filter system holders.

If this lens is to appeal to landscape photographers (as it surely must), this could be a big problem.

I just hope that it can be removed. However, Pentax claim it is an "integrated hood" so that doesn't seem likely.

Bad, very bad.

Many extrem wide angles have such elements, to protect the main lens.

Roen,

If you look at the Photokina images, it appears quite different.

It sits between the barrel and the focus ring and looks permanently attached.

Pentax state that it is "4. Integrated"

Here's a photo which shows it clearly (on the left of course)

I thought the DA 70mm had a permanent hood. I discovered that I could remove it a few weeks ago. I hope the 15mm have something like the 70mm.

Do anyone know the size of this lens?

Edit: amcinroy, thanks for the picture. It looks wierd. Those two "flaps" makes no sense. They don't protect anything since the glass is below the filter screw mount.

Edit2: The 55mm is 66mm in length, maybe the 15mm is about 45-50mm in length? or around 40mm?

Those two flaps is just the retracted hood. Check the official announcements to see a picture with the hood in full open position.

Found it. Thanks eurostar.

Don't think the hood would block any filter. The hood would be outside the mounted filter.

It will if you are using a square filter system (Lee, Cokin etc) where the adapter ring has to sit flush with the barrel.

I use Photoshop CS3, don't need filters like that.
Understand what you're saying... it could be a problem.

Even CS3 can't really match the usefulness of a split neutral density filter mounted when you take the picture. It can almost, but its not the same. Thats pretty much all I use my cokin system for is different grade neutral density filters and split neutral density filters. CS3 won't be able to make a waterfall look like satin because I was able to use a slow shutterspeed even in strong light.

Yes, lets not go down the line of "I don't need filters so it doesn't matter".

Most landscapers who know what they are doing will be using square holders with split NDs, particularly coastal photographers who photograph moving water using single exposures. This hood design will be certainly be a concern to them.

The retractable hood does not affect the use or application of a screw in filter in anyway at all. If you look closely, you may notice that the lip with the threads is seperate than the edges of the hood. The filter remains stationary on its threads and the hood retracts or protrudes independantly.

I know. But most filters are round, not square. So they will fit.

I only hope this one fits the 49mm filter size I have on all my lenses.

Sigh,

You guys are not getting it.

Round filters are fine. But adapters rings for filter systems cannot sit flush with the end of this lens.

Round filters are useless as split ND grads.
