Let's have a look at the various RRPs at launch of recent 70-200ish f/4 lenses:
  • Tamron 70-210mm f/4 Di VC USD (February 2018): $799
  • Tokina AT-X 70-200mm f/4 PRO FX VCM-S (May 2014): $899
  • Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II USM (June 2018): $1,299
  • Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/4G ED VR (October 2012): $1,399
  • Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS (February 2014): $1,499
  • Panasonic Lumix S Pro 70-200mm f/4 OIS (February 2019): $1,699

The HD Pentax-D FA 70-200mm f/4 will most certainly be more expensive than third-party lenses and among the cheapest OEM lenses. Something between $999 and $1,199 I would say, with a guesstimate close to the lower end of the range.

But if we assume that it will be 60 percent of the cost of the DFA *70-200 then street price after a few months will be around 1000 dollars. Maybe a hair more. That seems right to me assuming good optics, small size (relatively speaking) and fast auto focus.

By league I was clearly referring to FF vs crop.

Why won't it be in the league of the Canon? Because it's not a star lens? The DFA 150-450 is very much in the league of the Canon 100-400 L, but the DFA zoom is not a star lens either. Don't be fooled by the fact that the DFA 70-200/4 won't be a star lens. That doesn't mean it won't be as good as the Nikon, Canon and Sony versions. And it will likely be priced accordingly.

If you're looking for a cheaper DFA telephoto zoom, hold off for the DFA 70-300, which I would guess will be priced somewhere between $600 and $800.

I'm saying it will not be in the league (price-wise, at least) of the DFA* 70-200/2.8. Which, incidentally, is 500 dollars cheaper than the Canon 70-200/2.8 IS (either versions II or III). The only Canon 70-200/2.8 that sells cheaper than the DFA is the 1995 version without IS at $1300.

Optically, of course I fully expect it to match the 20-year old design of the Canon 70-200/4. I am really not concerned about the optical quality since I know Pentax will deliver, I just want it under 700 grams and weather sealed.

When one says "league" normally they talk within the same format. In any case, there are crop lenses priced higher than not-so-premium FF counterparts (The Sony 16-55/2.8 is substantially more expensive than the FF 24-70/4, and the same price as the 24-105/4).

While it's true that a given FF lens will always be more expensive than the *same* APS-C lens, the question of "how much" depends on a number of other factors (and the comparison is anyway irrelevant unless we talk about equivalent lenses).

But you're comparing what the price of the DFA 70-200/2.8 is now, which is significantly lower than its MSRP (which was $2299). When the f4 version is released, it will be at an MSRP price, which is nearly always somewhat, or perhaps even significantly, higher than the price of older lenses.

Aha, I was checking the lens database and it said the MSRP was 1799. Same as the in-depth review and everything else I found.

Oh, I hadn't seen that. So it went down $500 roughly 5 months after release (and the Lens Database insists on "$1796 at launch"). More or less coinciding with the release of the K-1, actually.

The HD Pentax-D FA★ 70-200mm f/2.8 ED DC AW was delayed several times, to the point of being released one year behind schedule. Its price went down $500 when it was actually released: the report linked above is from the 16th of March, 2016 and the first copies were delivered on the 18th of March.

$1,799 was coherent with the European RRP announced almost one year before (€1,999), $2,299 was not. The European RRP didn't move.

Aha, that explains a lot (and clears the confusion surrounding the initial pricing). Thanks for the info, as usual

It is 1771€ in Spanish Amazon. Pricing, as usual, depends on country.
