greater margin ==> more profit per unit, not more profit overall.

You would have to study "elasticity" to see whether more margin or more units is better {depends on whether units goes down slower than margin goes up}
Mistral75, I think, suggests Ricoh prefers to produce a smaller number of higher margin units over a larger number of lower margin units at this time.

Well put. That seems an excellent strategy in a declining market for a small player. As long as they can sell what they produce within the time frame they calculate it will work.

That's what I understood.

If the same principle applies to cameras the price, specs and planned production of K-new should be interesting.

It very much depends (on God knows what): the K-1's launch price was moderate whereas the KP's launch price was pretty high, in particular in Europe.

A lot of us are going to be up long nights formulating strategies for convincing the wife that almost $2000 is a fine price for a camera, despite the fact the last two were about $800.

Even $3000 would be no problem if the camera kit is delivered within a new Louis Vuitton bag.

I don’t know. At some price a KP and K-1 in-hand looks pretty good.

OTOH maybe some little-used gear can find a different home.

Of course, you buy the bag separately and she gets to choose. Timing is always important too, not Christmas or her Birthday, you can't buy your camera for her birthday present. OTH you could try, let us know how that works out?

I need something else. My other half isn't into high fashion, name brand stuff.

I guess I could sell the K-30, but it's been good to me and will probably only bring back a small fraction of the K-??'s pricetag. My least-used lens is probably the 35mm f/2.4. That'll fetch at least $75 on the marketplace!

What a strange choice of words to describe a normal situation. With any company, you can only choose to buy the products they actually offer. That is not blackmail in any way, you are no forced to buy anything. And purely because you might not have the specific choices that you want to have, there is plenty of choice in pentax land, including a very highly reviewed pentax FA*80-200/2.8 that goes for less than what the new 70-200/4 will likely cost.

I dont understand these 'I can't get what I personally want right now, and will therefore ignore there are options and there is progress' type of responses.

EDIT: as an addional point: please don't state 'pentax FF users are looking for / want X' without substantial evidence. Not everyone wants the same thing. As an example, I too am a pentax FF user, but I am not looking for any of the lenses you describe. I shoot nearly only primes and have the ones that I need. Some of the lenses I am thinking about buying include the FA limiteds, which accidentally do not exist outside of pentax land.

I'm covered with millimeter at will, but, but for my K1 I would like to allow it to look through newer glasses that would move far quieter and even faster and more decisively in inclement weather without buying "pro lenses" because I'm an amateur enthusiast and not a beginner or a professional

It would, indeed.

IMO this is an excellent argument: the last were *only* $800. You should be proud.
