Yes, I've tried and I got vignetting. I had to butcher the filter holder to reduce vignetting on my Tamron 24-70 that has a 82mm filter thread and vignette at 24mm without CPL and vignette even more with a CPL on. In fact, whether there is vignetting or not doesn't depend much of the filter thread dimension, it also depends on the position of the filter thread relative to the front element of the lens and also it depends on the optical construction. Filter thread is no guarantee that you can use a 100mm filter on a wide angle lens without vignetting. Before you claim Sony 16-35 doesn't vignette with a 100mm on FF, you have to test it. I'm starting to have some experience with filter, I am at my 4th filter system...

SMC F 70-210 is a small and light option to use while waiting for the new 70-200.

And it is a tremendous value...

But it’s not weather sealed, focus is slower than I’d like, it’s f5.6 at 210, and it’s not as free of aberrations as I would expect from a modern lens...

That said, I like mine

There are significantly more painful things than 70-200/4...

70-200/4 even if wery good cannot outperform 1kg Tammy or Sigma 70-200/2.8@F4. And since that Tamron is still on market and still very cheap, there is little realistic need for such "cheaper and smalled DFA*70-200/2.8 alternative".

DFA12-24
DFA20/1.4 (or F1.8 or F2)
DFA24/1.4 (or F1.8 or F2)
DFA28/1.4 (or F1.8 or F2)
DFA35/1.4
DFA85/1.4
DFA105-135/1.8
(DFA70-300)
DFA 150-600, 200-600 or similar are more important system lenses if Ricoh still wants to continue with FF DSLR journey (which I considr to be suicidal resource waste against rest of the FF market)

In current scenario the 70-200/4 plays little role. And K1II is now in shadow while things like D850, Z7, A7RIII, A7RIV are shining on the FF market.

This!

I’d be happy with 1.8 though, since 1.4 will make the lens a bit too large and expensive for my taste.

24mm is such a useful focal length on both FF and ASP-C. My daughter shoots with a Sony NEX-7 (ASP-C), and the Sony/Zeiss Sonnar E 1.8/24 is her favourite lens.

20mm, 35mm, 85mm, and variable aperture 70-300 all seem to be on the road map. The other lenses seem unlikely. Having a 70-200 f4 definitely seems worthwhile if it has fast, silent autofocus, is sharp wide open, and is weather sealed. It may not be "most painful" to you, but I think there are plenty of Pentaxians who would be interested in it over the Tamron 70-200 f2.8.

A modern telephoto zoom is at the top of my list.

And I’d rather have something like a nice 20-35 f4.0 than a stack of monster f1.4 wide angle primes.

We need to remind ourselves that in the large survey on this site the most favored lens only collected 7% of votes if I remember correctly.

So whatever lens Pentax will market next, 93% of forum users could start to whine that its the wrong one - for that individual person.

It’s the internet, so the number would likely be higher than that

Cameras / lenses are especially affected by this phenomena.
