"No, you can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometime you find
You get what you need"

The D FA compensates by being longer.
Ignoring such an amazing option to ask for something somewhat different, that's just moving the goalposts with the purpose of never being satisfied.

The reason of the constant aperture is that a 100-400mm f4 lens for example can be used with both 1.4x and 2x TCs and still have very good tracking on some cameras.

At 400mm f4 with 1.4x TC = 560mm at f5.6 (110mm longer than 450mm from the Pentax 150-450mm at the same aperture).

400mm f4 with 2x TC = 800mm f8 (there are quite a few cameras these days that have more than 25 af points sensitive to f8 and you're have the option to track action with those af points).

But, it will be heavy and expensive such a lens...

Having some hypothetical HD-DFA*100-300/4 we'll be able to happily remove DFA150-450 and replace it with some DFA150-600

Btw. 100-300 attached on APS-C is the same as 150-450 on FF.. and F4 with 1.5TC results in same 150-450/6.3
Preferably in single barrel design where nothing extends when zooming. Like the one below, but with modern optic components and some strong silent ring ultrasonic motor

And a 300mm f/4 with 1.4x RC gets you 420mm at f5.6. So you'd really have to get "heavy and expensive" to outdo the D FA 150-450.

IMO the supposedly affordable 70-300-ish telephoto is more important for Pentax, than a 100-400 f/4. Or the 70-200 f/4. I might want the later...

You cannot replace the D FA 150-450 since you don't own one

I'm not sure I'd be happy with a significantly larger 150-600mm, 3kg for the lens itself...

Fully agree with this. But lets make it 60-300/4-5.6 because nobody else has such lens and it will be more attractive for APS-C users too..

I'm sad about the 55-300 PLM. That was nice opportunity to do such step. Now they have several APS-C compact telephotos, but nothing for FF. Although DA55-300 is somewhat usable even on K1 with some vignetting, that can be cropped out.

Well.. it works on film too..

Proof: DA55-300 on MZ-10 with some old expired agfa @ lot of sun during sunset.

Yes, they have both the DA 55-300 f/4-5.8 and the DA 55-300 f/4.5-5.3 PLM. The second is so much better in speed and noise than the first. I own both of them. I wonder how many would have been sold if the second had been a DFA lens instead of a DA lens? I'm not convinced that many go to the K-1 series thinking of photographing animals {remember the reaction to it as a "K-3ii replacement"}. I expect the company is better off this way.

If the DA 55-300PLM was a DFA I would say a lot of people would have buy it.
I think the DFA 70-300 on the road map will sell like hot cake.

I have a 2.8 trio zoom lens, but a light, high quality zoom, would definitely be a perfect fit for me for casual moment when I don't need the triumvirate.
