How I like the form factor of the MZ-D. The sexiest camera ever not to be produced...?

Thank you very much for your summary of the event and the various tweets.

This Pentax K-1 from 2000 is also known under the MZ-D and MR52 names. It was presented, for the first time I think, in Tokyo on the 16th of July 2011 for a 'touch and try' event organised to promote the Pentax Q.

That's a bit exciting to me. I am happy they are using the K-3 moniker too to describe it at least. Because, to me, this indicates that perhaps it will still be using the K-3 form-factor and not the KP's with respect to the shutter release button placement and top panel. Hopefully it comes with a serious hand grip like the K-3 or K-1.
I'm fairly sure Pentax understands that their regular users are unwilling to give up the upper panel LCD, twin SD slots, larger buffer, etc. With my prior experience in using film cameras, the KP has been great for me, even with the 55-300mm PLM lens; I have my finger on the shutter button as I lift the camera to my eye, so I didn't even know that placement was "an issue".

That body is way, way too large for me.
My Super Program {left side of my signature photo} remains the camera I measure all others against.

I would favour the MZ-1, which is from the same period and has shared the same destiny.

You think that new FF camera is more likely than new crop sensor camera?
QuoteOriginally posted by x4rd Quote
I think that those could be the new teleconverters, as we mentioned them before (also - Asahi Man had talked about them)
@Asahi man has implied that a lot more than just APS-C camera and lens are in the pipeline - he saw a lot of FF development on the part of the internal roadmap he's seen.

What a pity that the Philips CCD was mere garbage. I remember that 2 camera's where announced at the Kina using this CCD, this MZ-D and Contax D. The MZ-D was further in development (as in ready for release) but eventually Pentax pulled the plug on it. Contax meanwhile, went ahead and released the D. In reviews of the Contax it became clear why Pentax didn't release the MZ-D: IQ was bad wit a lot of noise even at base ISO. ISO 400 was plain unusable...
However, I always found it curious as to why Pentax didn't keep the MZ form factor. Given how far development was, it must have been easier to swap the sensor and release an MZ-D with the Sony CCD than to develop a whole new camera (ist D.)

Contax N - right name. It was not bad sensor for 2000 year.
Contax N Digital Review - Luminous Landscape

Yes, ISO400 was no good, but first users of Contax N Digital liked this camera. It was made like camera under film tradition,
it had ISO25 and 50.

Pentax hadn't released MZ-D because of economic and marketing reasons. Not IQ. The sensor was too expensive and the camera too.

Kyocera photo division was died very quick after Contax N release.

dunno, it has been done before. But that Other, funky modeling, quite slim profile still. and great handle too! I’d actually like if those wheels would be tilted 45deg. like K-1 the godfather.

oh and those little shutter mode and metering switches...yes!

Yeah, it worked. @Docwrn posted a photo here of the controls all lit up. That is not the issue .... I would hate to lug something that size around with me - the Super Program is the "perfect camera" from my perspective.

This one was a D-SLR prototype?

If Ricoh release something like it (or EXACTLY like it) I believe it'll sell like hotcakes!!!!

At least, I love it!

- The rep brought a prototype of the DA* 11-18. It looks basically complete.
- It has an indentation for attaching a “lens heater for shooting stars”.
- It doesn’t seem to be confirmed that the heater will be released.
In one photo, there is what appears to be one 11-18 sample attached to a K1. This lens seens bigger than I thought for one DA lens.

I like having the battery grip on my K1/K1-II. They pretty much live on them. I rarely use them on my K5-IIs or K3. No idea why. All about the "feel" I guess. Just waiting for teleconverters. Hopefully available before I head out to Yellowstone in May.
