This is a pattern with Pentax "entry" level DSLRs dating back at least to the K30. At that time - as now - the Pentax offering does more and offers more than the Canikony products in the same price class. To get the Pentax feature set and performance, you have to cough up more cash to other brands.
I recently tried to counsel a friend who was buying a DSLR for her daughter to consider Pentax, for a variety of reasons. The young lady wanted to take landscapes and abstracts, but not much in the way of action shots. Pretty well tailor-made for Pentax. Add to that the better availability of quality older K-mount glass at what can be phenomenal prices compared to the glass for other brands, and it seems almost elementary. Alas, my friend's daughter was locked into the idea of a Nikon, and now has an entry-level one. I'm sure she will do fine with it, but I suspect it will require an upgrade much sooner, and her lens costs will be higher.
At least she's not using a cell phone!
