Comparing 11mm f4 to 12mm f4, which is the most direct possible from these graphs, the Sagitall contrast is 90 vs 80 at the edge, and the same microcontrast (probably represents best what you mean by 'resolution' - fine detail) is about 45 versus about 25. 15-20 might be considered the lowest acceptable score.

That the SvM track so closely means astigmatism is really minimized, so it should mean superior bokeh and is also an exciting prospect as an Astro lens … helped that it is also f2.8, not f4.

Now, the 12-24 … I own it. And it's such a good lens I've used it on the K-1. But the DA* is clearly better.
I really, REALLY admire your patience dealing with speculative and baseless opinions.

Thanks, Gianclaudio … I won't even ask Ogl to interpolate by looking at the graphs what the DA* does at 12mm instead of 11mm. No point.

He honestly thought a few weeks ago that MTF was something you only did with film, not digital...

Yaotomi has a report on the HD FA 35 f2 now.
?????? HD PENTAX-FA35mm F2 ???????? ? ?? ??????????? - ????

It’s a pity that it’s so overcast in Japan this week. You can’t really see whether the new coating helps with the sun or high contrast situations from this.

All of that pictures seems a bit out of focus for me.

In fact all the pictures was shoot at f/2.8 or less, and old lenses are not good wide open.

Third one is marked as F8 shot, and well, its not focused properly.

Firmware updates for K-1 (Version 1.51) and K-1 II (Version 1.03).

I find it odd to begin with the two 24x36 cameras to optimize the way Pentax cameras perform with an APS-C lens!

Digital Camera Utility 5 is updated too (Version 5.8.2)

Agree on the oddness. But they have to wait with the APS-C cameras to not prematurely expose the new top model

I presume any new APS-C Pentax DSLR would natively include 'optimized performance' with the HD Pentax-DA★ 11-18mm f/2.8 ED DC AW, therefore its announcement, or lack thereof, shouldn't interfere with the K-70, KP and K-3 II (for instance) enjoying an updated firmware.

No matter how much you invest into production and QC, you can't have a zero defect rate. Especially factoring in a rough shipping, maybe mishandling in the shop.
Is this a common occurrence or not? This is the question...

I'm also a bit concerned about the lens being exchanged by the dealer - would they attempt to re-sell it?
On a Romanian Facebook group, there was a discussion about a lens whose focus ring would not work. A really obvious defect. Surprise - that lens was previously returned by (at least) one other user for the same defect. And resold as new (not by Ricoh Imaging).

Does this offer more than a 12-24mm?

I currently have the SIGMA 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 DG EX lens and even though it is a bit slower than this Pentax 11-18mm, the quiet motor, thefts focus and the IQ of the K-1 and the KP makes me wonder if I truly need this lens--I also have a 15-30 which is larger and overlaps both of these....in reference to the 35mm F/2 redux, I have an original copy and it works fine for my intended purposes (on both APS-c and FF).

So why did Pentax offer these lenses when there are other gaps that need to be tended to?

The 15-30 is quite different, it's a FF lens and 11mm is significantly wider than 15mm. On APS-C, the 15-30 is more like a "wide zoom" than a UWA. It really can't substitute for a UWA zoom. The DA 12-24 may be seen as a substitute, but it's really not the same class either.

The 11-18 appeared on the roadmap many years ago, so we can speculate this lens has been on the drawing board for a long time. It just happens that it's ready now. So, why not release it ? There's no high end APS-C UWA zoom in the current lineup. It just makes as much sense as any other lenses to develop. Like any new lenses, some people will find they have no use for it and would have prefered something else. But this doesn't mean Pentax should have worked on something else. Plenty of people will find it useful. And as many people would have no use for the lens you think Pentax should have worked on instead...

From what I know this sigma 12-24 is soft, 11-18 should be much better image quality wise.
