Laugh.. yeah, so true. Surprisingly, I've already see one of these plastic FA 35 and FA 50 on a K1 and it didn't look bad as I originally imagined.

As for the presumed screw-drive, many folks seem to be happy enough with the existing screw-driven lenses in the FA- and DA Limited series. No, they're not as quiet as the SDM, DC and PLM lenses, but I wouldn't say the screw-and-gear noise is outrageous.
As long as Pentax is pitching this to current Pentax users, it won't do any harm - but users from other brands expect new lenses to be quiet, very quiet.

Thank for sharing your thoughts. If the new FA35 had 7 or 8 rounded blades and WR with DC motor, do you plan to buy it for using it on your Pentax K1 ?[COLOR="Silver"]
My wish means nothing.

I have no any plans now because I have no money for any new photo equipment in the nearest future.
If I would have free money I'd think about such lens for travel, because I need WR lens in our climate, but I have only DFA100 WR and it's not for travel...I use FA31 very often now and HD FA35/2 WR could be very useful lens for me.

I think that new HD FA35 is the same old FA35 with 6 aperture blades and HD coating only. I will be happy to be wrong.
To change SMC to HD on 20 years old lens is joke.

I like to see absolutely new lenses from Ricoh with any special IQ...But I don't think that we will see new limited lenses not worse than old limiteds in terms of IQ. I don't mean sharpness and low CA...

I think that certainly some people would expect quiet-focusing lenses but I don't know whether that's a prevalent view amongst users of other brands, especially concerning small prime lenses in general and this lens in particular. For some people, screw-drive could be a show-stopper, while others would prefer an in-lens drive but might be willing to live with screw drive.

@reh321, our posts didn't refer to the situations in which users would demand quiet lenses, such as weddings and theatres as mentioned elsewhere in this thread. However, I would think that the new FA 35/2 almost certainly wouldn't be a primary lens in those settings, if used at all, so the practical issue of focusing noise might be moot. Of course, there are a number of "very quiet" lenses under the Pentax brand.

What percentage of other users do you think would preclude Pentax because of the screw-driven lens families? Besides anecdotal accounts, I think that any recent valid surveys -- if they exist -- would help us to understand the possible aversion to the screw-drive and the Pentax brand.

- Craig

The photo of the lens looks convincing. I'd say the rumour is correct. I agree with the screwdrive criticisms because of sound, speed is fine.

This is only bad news is nothing else comes out soon. A line of small and cheap lenses like the plastic fantastics to support a more expensive da * line makes sense to me. Pentax users generally being skint and all.

Adding 20 / 28 / 35 / 50 with HD coatings = Proven tech on (some of them) cult lenses and would be an interesting take, though DPR would absolutely FLAME them. Update to this new barrel with HD and where appropriate rounded blades, (FA20/2.8), F28/2.8, F50/1.7. Keep the FA 50/.4 until out then make it a Limited and update the DA50/1.8 to D FA.
and would be very profitable. I could buy this 20mm in a heartbeat.

There is an extreme wide angle on the road map. I hope for a 18mm which would be great with the 31 and 43 limited. FOV respectively 90/60/45 degrees.

Old FA20/2.8 and FA28/2.8 are not stellar lenses...It must be radically upgraded to be good at FF 36-50 MP cameras...

I had F28/2.8 which was better than FA28, but I can't say that it's really something special and very sharp...FA20 is even worse than F28...

I still think it is fine.

Pentax has been releasing high end lenses -- very slowly. If they tweak some older lenses and release them at moderate prices, I'm fine with that. While they are at it, I would release the FA 135 f2.8 and the FA 20 f2.8 with new coatings. I really think that, combined with the 35, 50, FA limiteds and DFA 100 macro would allow for a very reasonably priced prime line up, with high end primes to follow for those who really need/want them.
