Except that it is not a new lens, it was already in the catalog.

If this is real, I'm not too bothered by screw drive. As others have said, this isn't the first lens I'd reach for in the "quiet-necessary" situations anyway.

On the other hand, I'd really rather they upgraded the 20 or 24 with new coatings and weatherproofing. That would have been a much more useful addition than the 35.

The new 35/2 wasn’t on the roadmap, so it’s just a nice extra from my point of view. They aren’t going to discontinue the FA35, so they’ve decided to add the latest coatings. The bottom line is that if you are shopping for a 35mm, there will be another option very soon. It can’t be a bad thing. I suspect the new coating will change the optical characteristics of the lens quite a bit.

I was a bit surprised by the cost of the DA* 11-18/2.8 so I checked what similar lenses cost for other systems. There aren’t any! This is a unique lens in the APS-C world. I realize Tokina has some older older wide angle zooms with f2.8, but an older 3rd party lens not a fair comparison to a newly designed DA*.

The other interesting point is that I can’t imagine the DA* 11-18 has been designed with the K-70 and KP in mind. It makes you wonder what level of camera the new APS-C top model is going to be.

My guess to this is that this lens is already an older project. First it wasn't going to be a Kaf4 mount. So that makes it start in the design proces maybe even before K-1. Got delayed due to the prioritising of the full-frame project. Then came back on the table.

So the camera it was designed for in the first place was the replacement for the K-3ii. That one, I don't see coming anymore.

Is that writing or something else? I can’t tell on my phone...
Would quick shift need any visible sign?
It’s probably just a label...

That’s the serial number block.

Of course, you are entitled to your opinion, but Ricoh stated at CP+ 2018 and multiple times since that a successor to the K-3 ii is coming. Putting a new lens into production for a camera that isn’t coming makes no sense.

I don't own an FA 35/2, but my impression is that it's a fine lens, based on many comments I've read here on Pentax Forums and the reviews in the review section. Indeed, if Ricoh were to scour PF for signs of interest, they would almost certainly conclude that this FA model is well regarded and probably worthy of a modest tweak.

As for the presumed screw-drive, many folks seem to be happy enough with the existing screw-driven lenses in the FA- and DA Limited series. No, they're not as quiet as the SDM, DC and PLM lenses, but I wouldn't say the screw-and-gear noise is outrageous. Of the lenses in my kit, the only one that annoys me occasionally is the 35mm Limited, when it racks from MFD -- but that's a unusually long focus throw.

FA35/2 was the first AF lens I bought for my K10D, way back in 2006. At the time many called it the poor man’s FA31 because it is small, sharp, fast-focusing, the colors really pop (especially blues) and flare and CA aren’t bad. It really isn’t that noisy. This should be a very nice lens if people give it a chance (my bet is they won’t).

I sold mine a couple years ago when I bought a second-hand FA31. Despite the 31 rendering, I miss the FA35/2.

Actually, after his constant Pentax bashing, I wouldn't even call that an opinion.

It's a no-brainer: releasing a product on the market costs money. They wouldn't finish and release it just because it was almost developed.

Focus throw is so short it’s not like the 20 / 28 / 35mm’s screw drive makes much noise. Especially when compared to offenders like the 50-200 or 55-300 which gave a tendency to rack in and out noisily when focus can’t be established.

My main complaint against my copy of the FA 35/2 is that the front element is easily marked and as durable as SMC is credited, I have never been happy with ease of cleaning. If the HD coating resolves that I would consider it and a relaunched 20/2.8. 15-30 is too big as a travel lens so I have been packing M20/4 and F28/2.8 as well as the 35/2 to compliment a Normal and telephoto.

It would be "new" in the same way that the HD DA limiteds were new. A truly brand new lens would be significantly more expensive than this will be.

You don't know anything because the photo of this FA35 comes from rumors. Shall the rumor come true, have to wait for the official release from Ricoh Imaging to know what the lens is about. It is our human nature of our minds to imagine think without evidence that those things are true, which sometimes completely misleads us.
Am I the only one who thinks that the rumoured HD PENTAX-FA 35 mm F 2 looks a lot like the AF NIKKOR 35mm f/2D?

I suspect this is an indication that maybe not all film era lenses are incapable of getting the most out of even the K-3 sensor or even easier the K-1 sensor, despite what kenspo and others boldly proclaim. And it's also curious that folks think the K-1 sensor is more demanding than the K-3 sensor. Do people not know that in terms of resolution the K-1 is going back to the K-5, not an advance on the K-3, in anything but the size of the image circle.

Coolness! An update to the promised lens meat and a bone, I wish that was a 24mm WR Limited bone though. Best wishes to Pentax though with these and I hope these will be marketed early.

I am for one who think Pentax's strong suit is by producing small, lightweight and WR photographic tools.

It is possible to make small primes with motors. Canon has being doing it for years (24, 35, 40, and 50 STM primes).

I wonder if PLM could be incorporated in the volume of this lens?
