A few things to be noted concerning the HD Pentax-FA 35mm f/2:
  • It's a FA, not a D FA, therefore its optical formula is probably identical to that of the smc Pentax-FA 35mm f/2 AL (save for the HD coating)
  • There is no motorisation name in its designation, neither SDM nor DC, therefore it's probably a screw drive lens
  • The lens hood slightly differs from that of the smc Pentax-FA 35mm f/2 AL: PH-RBG49 instead of PH-RBA49. The lens casing could slightly differ from the current one.

If the 35mm f2 significantly underperforms the DFA*50mm in autofocus performance then Pentax is wasting it's time, unless it's pricing is very low.

There were no pics with the rumor, maybe those will come tomorrow. Anyhow when announced on thursday we will know everything. On the bright side. There is still room for another announcement between January 31 and Feb 28 (when CP+ starts).

What price can we expect in Europe?
I think the best way to judge is to look at a previous example.

The same site reported the price of the DFA* 50/1.4 as 148,500 yen. So the DA* 11-18/2.8 would seem to be 20% more expensive.

That might help to estimate how much it will be in other countries.

Re-releasing an already available lens with new coatings would be an odd thing to do, and sort of goes against the stated policy of concentrating on * lenses and Ltds. The only logic would be if they needed to do a new production run, weren't planning a modern 35mm anytime soon and wanted to bring it in line with the current offering both visually and in terms of coatings. Scarely worth an announcement though.

It is not negativity - it's concern. I will just point out that we already have revamped 35 mm glass and it is HD Pentax-D FA 645 35/3.5 AL [IF] for medium format. And yes - it is screw driven.
I agree with you, it would be useless to release a screw driven lens, but at the same time, i am hoping that you are wrong, and it is in fact DC or SDM motor driven (although i am not interested at the moment in a 35mm lens)

I have 35-50 well covered, except I'd like a WR lens, possibly with a focusing motor. If this doesn't have either I have no interest at all. Maybe this is just a way to say they have a semi-modern 35mm for FF?

Nokishita Camera just posted a low-res picture. Same link as the OP.

Sad to see such picture.
Revamp lens is welcome, considering the limited resources Ricoh have, but what I plan to see is those with super-fast PLM motors or at least. SDM or DC ones.

What's wrong with a screw drive lens !!, the autofocus mechanism consist of a small rod with a drive cog on the end, could not be simpler, why involve a complex servo motor in a small and compact lens (it looks identical to the last model in size) getting a motor in a lens with only a front filter mount of 49mm would be a tight fit, the change of lens hood designation may point to the hood now being used on another lens or lens' , may be a updated fa 50/1.4 with a bayonet lens hood is on the way, or the reintroduction of the fa 28 2.8, all three lens showed excellent performance.

well, they've changed the focusing ring

It looks to me, as I say, like a stop-gap measure - a few easy to effect changes for new production run while they plan a modern version. Not worth an announcement.

I have the existing FA35/2 and I really like it. The only real complaints I could have about the image quality are hexagonal bokeh and CA. If this has new coatings and rounded blades, it should improve on both of those points. If users want something more upscale, Sigma makes the 35/1.4 in K-mount, so there are other options. This is genuinely tiny by modern standards.

Think positive: the Pentax cameras, at least the 24x36 cameras, will keep their in-body AF motor for the decade to come.

have you shot with any of Pentax's new DFA* lenses on a K1 body? Because that would answer your first question.
