I think you can read too much into this. The KP may have been rejected not because it was small, but because it came as people were looking for an APS-C flagship follow-on. Many people complained that it did not have the features they expected in a flagship camera. I think it would have been viewed differently if it had been introduced explicitly as a model that slotted in as a travel/hiking/street camera below a new K-3iii.
Pentax never claimed the KP was a K-3ii replacement.
It was introduced as a small camera for small lenses.

Asahi man said that KP was actually meant to be replacement for K-3 II, and the flagship title moved to the K-1.

In other words, they expected someone wanting large camera, with lots of battery capacity, reserve SD, top LCD, etc to switch to FF, just as was true in the age of film.
They didn't anticipate users wanting those capabilities from an APS-C camera.
I'm guessing they expected APS-C to become a niche.

Good idea is to make only absolutely new lenses...
You say that, and yet... If the revised 35 f/2 comes in at under GBP 500 here in the UK, I could see me buying that before I go for an upgrade to my K-3 / K-3II. I've wanted an FA35/2 for some time, but new copies are ridiculously expensive here. A brand new, HD-revised version would be seriously tempting for me. However impressed I might be by what I've seen of the D FA 50/1.4, I'm not concerned with that level of optimisation for my own photography.

I think the new 35/2 could be a popular lens... if, and only if, it's priced right globally...

Old FA20/2.8 and FA28/2.8 are not stellar lenses...It must be radically upgraded to be good at FF 36-50 MP cameras...

I had F28/2.8 which was better than FA28, but I can't say that it's really something special and very sharp...FA20 is even worse than F28...
You must have had a bad copy of the FA28. Mine is excellent and in a different league than all other 28s I used before. I know it can happen, I have a bad copy of the FA35 (something to do with the hybrid AL technology perhaps?). So a new HD FA35 might be nice for me.

My copy was good....But triangular bokeh is no good...I'd like to see better sharpness at 2.8 and better resolution at f4-5.6 in the edges..
Pay attention that F28 is different lens. Not the same as FA28.
I tried FA28 and F28 before purchase.
FA28 iwas not better. 6 apertures blades and softer than F28.

Apparently only the coatings (HD and SP) and the exterior design are new. The new lens is 2g lighter and 0.5mm shorter than the smc version.

Price seems alright (not a give-away, not crazy high) for the 35. $1400 for the 11-18 seems a bit on the crazy side to me...

The 11-18 looks very nice. But 1400 is a lot...more in fact than the 15-30 costs now. Not sure I could justify both.

As far as Fuji vs Pentax, both the XT2 and XT3 are significantly more than the KP. I'm not interested in video. Not really any evidence the still images are any better. In fact I'd bet Pixelshift on the KP is a lot better than what the Fuji can do. And there is a pretty solid line-up of APS-C lenses for Pentax.
Why would I make that switch?

New HD FA35 is cheaper than old one...Hard to say if it's good or not...They could use other optical glass to reduce the price...

European pages are up to:
They are showing a comparison between SMC and HD 35mm F2:

Certainly less reflections. I view that as less character so I will be happy with a cheaper SMC model

Also that anyone who'd spend $1000 on a kit could certainly spend $3-4k.

(Sorry... Meant to quote reh on Pentax' APSC assumptions.)
