Thanks for the insight. My interest of the FA 35 (or DA40) is the size, because [long story short], I can fit the K1 with battery grip vertically in the bag and this is something that is not possible with any of the zooms. The only prime I currently have is the SMC M50 1.7, it fits in the bag, nice for traveling. I wouldn't be interesting in the sigma, because it would be almost as large a one of my zooms.
Isn't a body cap what you need, BE - it would be a lot cheaper?

I have the FA35 and it's both very good and very compact, BTW.

I seen pics of the 11-18 on a KP, it is a beast, the lens hood diameter is more than the height of the camera!

Happy with my DA15

True, though having 11mm is considerably wider than 15mm. That's the versatility of this zoom.
Indeed, the DA 15 is one of the reasons I decided to move my DA 12-24 along, which was an absolute stunner of a lens, but it too had a chunky front element and lens hood, making it bulky in the camera bag, although not overly so (the DFA 15-30 is just another level).
The 11-18 will certainly be a similar consideration.

It's a beast, but definitely a lot smaller than the 15-30 and still reasonable when compared to the 12-24. The DA 15mm it is not, however. But then the DA 15 doesn't get you to 11mm or f/2.8 or weather resistant.

I personally don't need 11mm, I use the Samyang 14mm f2.8 as my astro lens but f2.8 isn't all that great a light sucker anyway. FF camera with 24mm f1.4 prime is vastly popular in the astro community as is the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8

Here is the 11-18 with the hood on...

The modern lenses are starting to dwarf the cameras. I hope Pentax still support their form factor primes in future, the likes of DA and FA Ltds tick all the boxes for me, and mean that the camera bag remains light and small.

I'm not sure anyone is buying it as a subtle street photography lens. You definitely get away with a lot more using a pancake lens and less black eyes

I'd say the upgrade to the FA35 demonstrates exactly that

Yep. Hope so, but I'd like more with QuickShift in keeping with the DA Ltds along with the modern coatings and WR.

I’m not sure what you mean by “modern”, Ash, but my DA14/2.8 and the DA*16-50/2.8 aren’t exactly tiny.

PS – I’ve got the DA15, as well – nothing like redundancy in a collection, is there? Guess which one gets used the most?

I note that someone was suggesting that an aperture ring was incompatible with Quick-shift, and I’m struggling to visualise why that would be a problem, but I’m happy to be enlightened.

Not sure if you prefer smaller or larger lenses judging by your question but the HD DA 20-40 f2.8-f4 Limited is a relatively compact zoom and very lightweight for the superb IQ it produces. I think Pentax got this one exactly right and I can't fault it, it replaced every prime I had in the zoom range including DA 40 f2.8 Limited and prefer it at 40mm because of the colours and flare resistance (virtually zero).

By modern I meant the DFA and DA* lenses that are making the cameras look disproportionately small. And I also mean the best and latest lens coating treatments that prevent the most ghosting and distasteful flare without affecting image quality. The kind of results being currently enjoyed by DFA 24-70, 70-200 and 150-450 lens owners.

Yeah, the Ltd series are always great to compare with: you can't improve on perfection

I had the DA 14 for a while. I just didn't bond with it well, so I parted ways with her.

Hard to know what makes a lens's focusing system capable of QuickShift, but I would wager that the HD FA 35 was a quick lens development that essentially brought the FA 35 into the modern era without much effort (just put in weather seals and churn it through).
