Totally agree...but on the K-1 it's sharp where I need it to be. The 11-18mm is a nice lens, but at this point it crosses over.

The 15-30 is quite different, it's a FF lens and 11mm is significantly wider than 15mm. On APS-C, the 15-30 is more like a "wide zoom" than a UWA. It really can't substitute for a UWA zoom. The DA 12-24 may be seen as a substitute, but it's really not the same class either.

The 11-18 appeared on the roadmap many years ago, so we can speculate this lens has been on the drawing board for a long time. It just happens that it's ready now. So, why not release it ? There's no high end APS-C UWA zoom in the current lineup. It just makes as much sense as any other lenses to develop. Like any new lenses, some people will find they have no use for it and would have prefered something else. But this doesn't mean Pentax should have worked on something else. Plenty of people will find it useful. And as many people would have no use for the lens you think Pentax should have worked on instead...
Clackers:

Yes I see it was on the road map and why not produce it, but at some point you will need a new body to stick it on...as of now, my FF glass as well as my DA glass is set. I rarely if ever, go below 18, but it fits nicely in someone's kit if they only want to carry 2 lenses. For example 11-18mm then the 18-135mm with your KP and you have a good all around weekender kit for various scenerios.

DPreview just posted a gallery of 11-18 shots done on a KP. They look nice, though I’m not sure what all that blue stuff is in the Seattle sky...

OK, that's cool! I hadn't checked in the software yet, but the DA*11-18 wasn't listed on their website yet, so I assumed it wasn't supported yet. Seems the website wasn't updated yet when I looked?

Tx!

It will be great to have a profile on this lens. It arrived today, and my initial tests show excellent geometry until 11-12mm, where simple barrel rears its rounded head. Not as bad as the Sigma 10-20, but worse than my trusty Sigma EX 12-24.

Amusing tweet from Nokishita Camera: Twitter

Translation: 'The next lens released by Tokina seems to be an ultra-wide-angle zoom for APS-C SLR. (11-16mm or 11-20mm renewal?)'

The Tokina AT-X Pro 11-16mm f/2.8 DX dates back to 2007, the Tokina AT-X Pro 11-16mm f/2.8 DX II to 2012 and the Tokina AT-X Pro 11-20mm f/2.8 DX to 2015.

Will this new Tokina lens continue the cooperation between Ricoh and Tokina, i.e. be a Tokina-badged version of the HD Pentax-DA★ 11-18mm f/2.8 ED DC AW like the Tokina opera 50mm f/1.4 is a rebadged HD Pentax-D FA★ 50mm f/1.4 SDM AW?

If so, it would mean that Ricoh are doing everything in their power to improve Pentax's profitability through licensing revenues or even contract manufacturing. (I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the Tokina opera 50mm f/1.4 is manufactured by Ricoh.)

If Tokina does release their clone of the 11-18, certain web sites will continue to claim the Pentax patents are fake news and Tokina is the real designer

I caught myself wondering if the aperture mechanism was a Tokina on the D-FA 50 due to the max aperture being an f16 and not f22.

I've seen a few websites ignoring the Pentax patents and keep on going with the 'all new Pentax lenses are rebadged Tamron or Tokina lenses' mantra but none claiming the Pentax patents are fake news.

It would be quite strange Tokina copying a wide angle zoom from Pentax. Pentax being the brand without wides and Tokina being regarded as the wide zoom specialist! In this case I would completely understand the assumption of the inverse relationship.

Yet the patent request corresponding to the optical formula of the HD Pentax-DA★ 11-18mm f/2.8 ED DC AW was filed (JP,2016-239192) on the 9th of December, 2016 by Ricoh and published (JP,2018-097053,A) on the 21st of June, 2018.

The name of the inventor is Takahiko Oishi. He is also one of the inventors of a patented but not released 4.2mm f/1.8 lens for the Q system. The corresponding patent request was filed in June 2014 and published in January 2016 (JP,2016-004093,A).

Sorry I didn't dispute the fact just pointed out the oddity of the situation.
