GRIII &Theta both are Android system.
Android is a variant of Unix; the way Unix is configured, a developer can remove the parts s/he doesn't need, so Ricoh probably has a special build that is quite efficient in their context.

I believe this. In the developer interviews related to Theta V, one of the people interviewed had in his bio that he also works on the GR UI, so I had wondered about this.

From trying it at CP+, there was obvious indication that it was Android. It just works like a normal camera. If it speeds up wifi like Ooku is saying, few will be complaining.
GRIII can transfer while taking picture, even while turn off.

Android is probably a simple way of geting access to a lot of features. Its a giant ball of mess however, by no means lean. I'm also wondering how it interfaces with real time aspects of the os.

The pop up flash works quite well with the high contrast bw mode for gritty night time shots. Bars, messy parties etc. I don't think street photographers tend to worry much about being descreet once the shot has been fired.

Provoke Magazine type photographs are quite often flash in the face type things.

So, maybe there's some merit to the grousing....
Just take it out of your pocket and slip it in the hotshoe.Same effect.

Depends on it is built - how many, and which, modules are included.

It is the O/S. To make a real-time variant you include real-time components.

So, if anyone was grousing that the GRIII doesn’t have enough resolution, isn’t full frame, has no viewfinder, doesn’t do 4K, and has a slow lens, Leica just fixed that with the new Q2...

47Mp, full frame, 28mm f1.7, 4K, EVF... $4,995

GRIII looks pretty good...

There was s GR Live event in Osaka this week. I don’t think much new information was shared, but I found the following comment interesting.

Apparently, in real usage you can often get 250 shots from the battery, but 300 is not realistic. It’s not impressive compared to ILC camera, but it’s more or less what I expect from a compact camera.

Java SDK for embedded devices is about half the size of the full JDK. Not sure which one they'd use though for a camera.

Maybe one day we can play Doom on our Pentax cameras.

Kodak cameras can play Doom. https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/qkjv9x/a-catalogue-of-all-the-dev...mehow-run-doom

I wouldn't use Java.
We'll find out if it's a full fledged Android when the camera takes 5 minutes to start.

Yeah, surely it's not loading all of KDE, MySQL, Squid, etc just a custom minimal shell.

Daido Moriyama with the GR III. A short article with images on the Ricoh GR Blog. Just general impressions, but he seems to like the familiarity of the GR III.
