I really do dislike that place. Just everything about going there.

Reasons for choice
RICOH GR series has long kept the concept of a compact and light snap shooter with 28mm fixed focal length since its first, “RICOH GR1”, a film camera released in 1996. While retaining the same basic design and usability, the series has evolved into the incomparable compact camera, GR III.

The body is smaller than the previous model, and such functions as Macro mode became easier to use. It responds very quick, attaining higher perfection by accommodating an in-camera Shake Reduction mechanism.

Apart from the GR history and its enthusiastic fans, we highly evaluated the creators’ sincere attitude toward the long-held concept and the high degree of perfection of the camera. We applaud the advent of GR III as a mature form of a GR model. An extraordinary model, attractive enough as a product. It adds value to taking photos with a camera, not a smartphone.

It raises hopes for the whole category of compact digital camera, further opening up the possibilities for high-end compact cameras.

It should be noted that this is the fourth Camera Grand Prix Editors Award granted to Ricoh:
  1. 1995: R1
  2. 2006: GR DIgital
  3. 2014: Theta
  4. 2019: GR III

By comparison Pentax received four times their supreme award, the Camera Grand Prix Camera of the Year:
  1. 1992: Z-1
  2. 1998: 645N
  3. 2007: K10D
  4. 2011: 645D

Wouldn’t it be great if the next APSc body is a complete platform change that wins the Camera Grand Prix Camera of the Year?

Indeed, it would be, and so would be the Camera Grand Prix special edition.

Comments in the chat are slightly irritating but it's interesting to hear Ricoh's thought process.

The thought just occurred to me that by far the most exciting product released by Ricoh in the Asahi centennial year is not a Pentax.

How to do a special edition right and wrong in one easy lesson.

Gold P-E-N-T-A-X letters? Swanky leather strap with gaudy gold letters? Meh...

Wood trim? Wooden box? Oooh yes please, take my money. I will overlook the swanky strap this time.

It was made for the Japanese market and to the taste of Japanese camera collectors. And it made lots of sense for this market.

Still back ordered.. Anyone knows when they'll be back?
Every stockist in the UK is also awaiting stock. Seems that the first production run is all gone and you will need to await the second.
