For the Leica SL there is the Leica R-Adapter L, which allows you to use any R mount lens including the Leica Modul-R Telyt Lenses on the Leica SL camera. Now excuse me while I go outside to KICK myself because several years ago I sold ALL* my Leica R lenses off.

Leica R lenses extend from the Super-Elmarit-R 15 mm f/2.8 ASPH to the APO-Telyt-R 800 mm f/5.6

* Save for the 50mm lenses which are part of my somewhat famous 50mm lens collection.

That's unusual as the Canon and Nikon f/4 versions of the popular 70~200mm f/2.8 lenses cost less than the faster lenses. Tamron came out with a 70~210mm f/4 as a budget telephoto with less optical compromises involved than the compact variable aperture lenses.
As Beholder3 says, things are getting confusing here because I was talking about the 85 f1.4, not the 70-210 f4.

True enough, and I added to that confusion..

Though of course the D-FA*85mm f/1.4 is going to be expensive have any of the Pentax FA* designated lenses ever been cheap? though is it going to be as expensive as the Canon 85mm f/1.2L II?

If I had to guess I would put it at somewhere between 1600€ and 1800€.

Disclaimer: Absolutly nothing to quote me on. I got no information what so ever other than the idea of relative priceing to the dfa* 50 and other brands.

I’d be surprised if it was (85/1.4) under 1600€ at launch. I’d say 1789,00€ at launch. I’ll have to wait for it to come down a bit thou..unless it is 1500

The Leica R telephoto lenses are astronomically expensive especially considering they can also be adapted for use on the Leica S2.

Yes, it is great That Leica has given new life to these lenses especially taking into account the considerable investment they represent. At present, the Leica S2 along with Pentax 645D/Z are the only Medium format system cameras i'm aware of that have super telephoto class* lenses available for it. I know a few wildlife photographers that use the Leica S2 along with the Leica Apo-Telyt 800mm f/5.6 which is a beast of a lens, I have always wanted to get one on my optics bench to compare it with the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR.

To steer this thread back on track the portrait lens to beat is the Leica APO-Summicron 90mm f/2 on the M system, the resolving power of that lens on the Leica Monochrom is spectacular. I hope Pentax comes out with a monochrome version of the 645Z, a monochrome K1 would be nice too.

* lenses 600mm and over.

Head is still spinning. I think that they will come up with really nice 85/1,4. Not sure what that leica APO 90/2 is, but perhaps it will be close, atleast faster... Monochrome cameras are specialist things, but since they have also that IR version of 645D and K-P, perhaps, you know, more silly things happens

what's the advatage to monochrome sensor over just coverting to b/w in post?

Like pixel shift for every shot. Each element of the sensor is used to it's full potential without any filter eating photons.

As Phoebus said, the lack of filter increases the light sensitivity of the sensor (by about 1 stop), so the "base" ISO of the Monochrom is rated higher - it says ISO 160 but it has the noise and detail of a colour sensor at ISO 80. It is, however, a more cumbersome b/w since you cannot change the colour channels in post, so having filters in front of the lens might become again a necessity.

Precisely, also the removal of the CFA filter means no Bayer interpolation of the red/blue channels which results in significantly higher resolution and the lack of the CFA significantly improves the overall Quantum Efficiency of the sensor meaning higher ISO images will have less noise. The Leica Monochrom produces noise that is visually less disruptive to the image up to ISO 100,000*. Yes, the monochrome sensor means colour filters have to be used for contrast in B&W.

*There are some sample images from the 40Mp Leica M10 here

I forgot about that. No chroma noise means no ugly weird purple dots, so that's great. Whether that "justifies" the price tag is... well, irrelevant. It's not that much more expensive (about 10% extra) than the M10P, while having a 40 MP sensor instead of 24. It's a Leica, it will cost an arm and a leg and have something that us poor plebeians won't be able to understand* by virtue of being poor

*I was this close to scoring an R3 Mot Electronic with Summicron-R 50mm lens (I think it was the f/2.8) on an auction that I thought empty but of course two people dropped by last minute and drove the price upwards of 300€

thanks for the responses! those sample images look pretty grainy... but they don't say at what iso they're at. found a couple on flickr at base iso that look pretty great though.
