I think the difficult point for customers is if you actually NEED to replace a camera in the next year, or if the likely price rise associated with a higher end modes is going to be a problem. Otherwise, it is good to have a name associated with the project, and to know that he is someone who has worked on some of the best Pentax digital models.

A very clever marketing strategy indeed!! Speculate for a month, it will probably run on for several months or until we actually get a glimpse of the camera.

I'm very glad now that I have not jumped the gun and bought a KP as good as it is.
I hope I’m able to skip this rodeo and just cull my collection and shoot with what I keep.

Well that depends on your will power to resist. Me, I'm primed to buy when its introduced. My 19,000 shutter count K-3 should hang on until then.

I think the interview as recounted by JPT makes perfect sense.

I just visited Japan for 10 days. I visited several shops there as well a Pentax/Ricoh showroom. I have been and will continue to be (!) critical of how Ricoh are running things - I think they obstruct themselves more than necessary and I suspect this is grounded in a business culture dominated by engineers. I was in those shops and showroom because I had too, having lost my camera. Not because I really wanted to or felt there was a reason to. Pentax just fails to inspire me in any way, I'm afraid to say. They just don't speak my "language"

However, I don't think you guys should fear Ricoh is shutting things down any time soon. Pentax is just big there, with the full line up available in many shops, and cameras and other gizmos are just big in a way we are not used to in Europe and US of A.

With how Pentax how evolved lately, making bigger and more expensive lenses, it only makes sense to make a very competent body. KP is no doubt competent but it is not the obvious partner for big lenses such as the new 11-18mm. I tried that combination and it is not something I would like to walk around with for several hours.

I'm glad I purchased a KP; I'm getting excellent photos from it as this carnival progresses.
I just feel sorry for those who will truly need to purchase a K-3 class camera in the next year - and there is nothing on the shelf.

Funny what you said, at the same time peoples want mirrorless Pentax that will be smaller than KP. !!!!

Well, I was sort of in that situation, and the fact is none of the bodies really enthused me. Having used the K3II for a while now, I actually don't think it is much of a progress from my K5. It has some rather specialist features built in, but AF still misses focus more often than I like and I still struggle in low light situations, which I find myself in often.

My KP has missed focus only under very very poor light, and struggles in low light only when it needs ISO over 25600.

As I have said, KP is a much better camera than many people credit it to be. AFA the new DA*11-18/2.8 being ‘large’ on the camera, today I shot for several hours with my second hand DA*16~50/2.8 and the DA*50~135/2.8. They didn’t feel big on the KP at all. They handled nicely.

I can see the 11~18 has a large diameter, but it looks well-sized on Wheatfield’s camera to me.

Well, people's wants are all over the place. Perhaps you want mirror less. I don't. Yes, I could take photos with mirror less cameras, but it doesn't have any benefits for me. The big brands wants mirror less, because they have hit a limit for selling DSLRs. If I was to shift to mirror less, I am afraid it would not be Pentax seeing my money. No chance I am going to wait half a decade for Pentax to make a decent line up.

In any case. Setting my own preferences aside I just think Pentax lost the boat on this one and now I don't see how they could ever match Sony and the other big players with huge R&D budgets not to mention advertising budget. They are obviously not aiming big - they invest only in the most necessary. I know some American big shot apparently said they wanted to be number 3 or something like that. And then nothing happened ... Look, they are going to make a big body and a few big lenses and aim for a solid position as a small niche player.

Personally, I just tried all of Pentax's bodies in the shop and quite a few bodies from other brands. I wanted to like the KP - but even with the big grip it didn't work. I often walk around with the camera in hand for many hours and I didn't want to do that with the KP. The reason I bought the K3II was that it is a better match for my hand, unless it was equipped with the grip. I guess I could have made it work with a hand strap or whatever those things are called.

Edit: It is possible I flip the K3II when I get back home and give the KP the chance, Mono. Maybe we'll grow to like each other more :-) I mostly use smaller lenses anyway, and don't plan to change that. I wouldn't mind the new 11-18mm. I think it will prove itself as a very good lens.

You are fortunate to have access to a B&M store. I also have a K-1 and I think that camera is perfect in my hand. The K-1 full grip is nice. I use the medium grip on KP and a long strap cross-body. That’s just how I do it. If the camera isn’t comfortable for you you should do something else, as you have.

I walk around with the small grip on my KP and it fits my hand perfectly - but I wear 'medium' gloves and use the strap they package with the camera. I guess they made the KP for me; I hope they make one for you also.
