TIPA Awards 2019

Tipa World Awards 2019
  • Best Expert Compact Camera: Ricoh GR III.
  • Best 360° Camera: Ricoh Theta Z1.
  • No award for Pentax.

One knows where Ricoh Imaging's bribing marketing money is going.

No awards for pentax because pentax has no new products.

There are actually two conditions in order for a Pentax or Ricoh product to get a TIPA Award:
1. they must launch a good product
2. pretty much nobody else must launch a same category product

To answer Mistral's question about the D FA* 50mm: Sigma launched a 40mm Art.

Can't agree with you here, as the market is flooded with mediocre 360 cameras these day.

But it seems there are enough award categories these days that just about every meaningful product will win something...

This ^ ^ ^

There is a similar dynamic with automobile magazine awards for new models. Very seldom is there contention within a category.

Maybe for next year the new Theta thing will win something and Pentaxians can breath a sigh of relief.

That was a slight exaggeration - it's pretty much every known brand (like Canon, Nikon, Sony, third-parties like Sigma - I wouldn't be so surprised if between the D FA* 50mm and the Tokina Opera, Tokina would've got the prize).
Nikon's Key Mission won over the Theta V, by the way.

There's a single "Best DSLR prime lens" category. Sigma won it.

I must admit that I find it a little disquieting how roundly Pentax is ignored these days, even when they launch what some regard as game-changing products

This sounds like the words of experience. Of course, the photographic industry is not alone in exchanging honours for advertising/marketing/consulting spend; there is a "Canada's 50 Best Managed Companies" award that seems to be restricted to companies willing to pay a large sum to be "audited" by the "best managed coaches."

I think Ron is querying the GRIII; as far as I know the GRIII was released in mid March and the TIPA Awards seem to have been announced on 17th March. Assuming the awards were decided a bit before the announcement the Ron is probably rightly questioning if the decision was made prior to the camera coming on the market?

It really has nothing to do with the camera. His posts are always such a ray of sunshine.

I presume Ron was speaking of the Theta Z1: the camera isn't even on the market, yet it has won the best 360° camera award.
