Rumours of HD Pentax-D FA 50-300mm f/4.5-5.6/6.3

  1. Four days ago zackspeed wrote on DigitalFotoNetz.de that the Pentax D FA 50-300mm f/4.5-6.3 was on its way: a compact lens offering a high level of performance, based on the HD Pentax-D FA 150-450mm f/4.5-5.6 ED DC AW.

  2. Yesterday asahi man posted the following picture on the Digital Photography Review forum:

His comment under the picture 'Nothing about the new cameras....' is an answer to a question previously asked in the same thread 'Hello Asahi Man do you have any insider info on Ricoh's plans for FullFrame? We do know about the upcoming APSC body but I'm more interested in FullFrame Camera.'

He then clarified that the picture what that of a D FA lens (i.e. a 24x36 lens).

  3. Today our distinguished fellow member OoKU relayed asahi man's DPReview post with the following clarification: 'DFA50-300 F4.5-5.6'

    Source: New zoom 70-200 F4 - Page 18 - PentaxForums.com
This is beginning to look like a solid rumour, which was relayed by Pentax Rumors a few hour ago:

I have no exact information, my judgment comes from 1 and 2.
And Asahi man say DFA50-300/4.5-6.3 is “Nope”,maybe long or short than 300mm.

It's no longer in the mail Gary. I had forgotten what a lump it is, but it's only 2/3 the weight of the DFA*70-200

Hey maybe its a D-FA 50-150mm f2.8, something smaller than the D-FA* 70-200mm f2.8 for FF, and something to replace the DA* 50-135mm f2.8 for APS-C

It's to Nhelnhel's suggestion of the lens possibly being a D FA 50-150mm f/2.8 that asahi man retorts "Nope", not to the lens being a D FA 50-300mm f/4.5-6.3.

I asked Ricoh multiple times and stated many times on many forums that they should ditch all DA55-300 lenses and build one FF 50/60-300 instead. It would be cheaper to produce one lens usable on both systems than running two production lines and preparing new for K1 basic telephoto lens.

So maybe they started thinking.

A very bad idea!

See, what you're asking is to remove the 55-300 RE PLM, which is an affordable, compact, good quality and very fast focusing lens. Those characteristics won't be matched by a D FA.
Think about it.

Kunzite is right. There are two 55-300s in the Pentax library right now for APS-C the HD DA 55-300 WR which is 300 and the PLM which is 350. These are smaller, cheaper and the PLM probably focuses faster than the full frame 50-300 will. There's no particular reason that Pentax should ditch existing lenses in their APS-C line up. People who shoot APS-C exclusively like to have lenses that are tailored to their needs, even if they have the option to shoot with more expensive full frame lenses.

I remember shooting sports with a SMC A 70-210 f/4 back in the early 90's. The DA* 60-250 is a HUGE improvement Not a lump at all!!!

You did, in the end? Good for you.

The 60-250 will have a faster aperture, and I doubt you'll find the IQ lacking.
