New Sony APS-C Sensor - 26MP

Don't know if this counts as a rumour, as the source to the rumour is "I've received a tip"..

But here's 'that other sites' rumour claiming that the new Pentax APS-C may have this new Sony sensor..

If prototypes are now available the final could still be 6 months away. Remember it took them a long time to sort the K-3 cross talk issues. While the sensor sounds awesome, it's a rumour. Don't get your hopes up.

It's a sensor designed for mirrorless with on sensor PDAF and shooting black-out free 30fps EVF. Ricoh could be buying this sensor, but it seems to be an expensive option for a DSLR with an OVF. Why buy a sensor designed specifically for mirrorless.

Sony is rumored to be developing a APS-C version of the A9, and this looks like the type of sensor you would see in that type of camera. If the specifications are real.

It's a good point - but I'll throw some speculation that it may be a requirement for the rumoured hybrid viewfinder (?)

Because the back screen of Pentax's are mirrorless in operation. The mirror locks up when shooting in Live View. Do we have to tell you everything?

Not to mention, that there may be other improvements beyond PDAF.

Hopefully incorporating a new sensor is what's causing the delay in the release of the K-3 replacement.

It wouldn't be the first time Pentax stopped the presses to accommodate a new sensor.

The rumored hybrid OVF has been floating around for years. I would love to see Ricoh bring it to market, but Ricoh isn't a cutting edge technology company. The Hybrid OVF is going to be expensive and the K-mount user base isn't exactly known for embracing new and expensive technology.

Nah, you're wrong - Ricoh/Pentax is definitely releasing hybrid OVF in the soon-to-be-released K-3ii replacement.

(oh please, oh please, oh please)

Doesn't even need to be a hybrid viewfinder if that tech isn't ready yet. A kind of hybrid camera would be sufficient in the first step. Mirror up makes it essentially a mirrorless camera with all the fancy features minus viewfinder. Some (younger?) photographers don't even use the viewfinder on mirrorless.

The K-1, the Z and also the KP iirc already have face detection in LV. But for my taste focussing and the shutter procedure is a bit slow compared to ovf mode. But I don't know whether the mirrorless cameras are faster in this regard. Maybe a mirrorless sensor would fix this. The WG Series also detects smiles and if someone blinks, so they already have this kind of software in house.

However, as far as I know, mirrorless sensors have a bit of a banding issue due to their focussing pixels. Image quality is one of the core values of Pentax, so this would be interesting how they deal with that.

isn't this just the same 26mp sensor used behind the x-trans filter of the fuji X-T3? nothing prototype about it

Sony Semiconductor lists availability of 2 APS sensors. They were announced/leaked Sept 2018 but I don't know how long they've actually been available. (Products Line up for Camera Image Sensor for Camera | Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation)

IMX571 (referenced in this rumor) is 26mp, 16 fps at full resolution, back illuminated. IMX271 is 24mp, 19 fps, front illuminated.

I'll note that the only FF sensor listed is 24mp, there's no evidence of the K-1 36mp, so Sony probably does exclusive deals with camera manufacturers that never get offered on that page.

Why, in 2019, would someone designed a sensor that can't be used in a mirrorless ? They still work just fine in a DSLR. No need for the manufacturers to develop a DSLR-Only line of sensors.

So the DSLR won't have good enough AF in video mode

Usually Pentaxians get the same tech as others without the price premium once R&D is paid back by others. It is in the interest of Sony to also sell the same sensors to other brands.
Same sensor and performance as other brands , but with the ergonomics and intuitive user interface that Pentax is good at, eventually a little cheaper than Sony would be perfect.

It took a few years for Sony to copy Pentax pixels shift.

Exactly. With the articulated display and outdoor modes on the K1, it's a pleasure to use: no eye strain, no headache.
